Diff rebuild, which is easier?
Diff rebuild, which is easier?
Hey,
I'm driving a 1990 z32 N/A. The diff cover is leaking and I put the car into the shop to get a few things done to it and he told me that in order to do it the whole diff needs to be dropped to do this. Is this true and if it is I'm thinking about ordering a full gasket kit and make it a LSD. Would it be easier to order a new LSD diff and swap it out or do as I'm thinking?

I've never done the diff on my Z, its was done when I bought it, but I've done probably around a dozen diff jobs from fluid change, swaps, and gears but I've never had to drop a diff to do the fluid, or used a gasket always just gasket maker and that's on two 10 second cars...

And wtf does that last part have to do with anything? Whats the relevance between a 10 second car and using silicon to seal the diff cover?
Diff needs to be dropped to change the cover gasket. (might as well do a pinion seal as well) All z32's have VLSD's from factory. There is supposed to be a gasket, as the diff cover is also the rear diff mount. I would just use a gasket and come copper coat so it wouldn't have to be pulled if it started leaking again.
Nobody is saying anything about dropping the diff to change the fluid, he's talking about replacing the diff cover gasket.
