Diff is in!

thats the old one. it was leaking out the front seal, you can see the wet spot behind the flange. it never left any drips, cause the fluid was being flung on the underside of the car, and there was a nice ring of gear oil mixed in with the road grime. it had developed a LOUD howl, and was not operating properly. for a while i thought maybe my clutch was slipping, but it was the stinking diff. it was also jerking bad on decel, or if i was driving in traffic in 1st. made the whole car just feel wrong, even cornering was affected.

luckily, i found a Nissan/Infinity only wrecker near where i live. great place, they have a huge warehouse full of parts, even some for datsuns. $250 for a used diff with fewer miles than mine. it came off a '92, so it has the finned cover and the old style breather. got it slapped in this weekend, and it feels like a whole new car now! i can actually HEAR things, like the exhaust, instead of HOOOOOOWWWWWWLLLLLL.

I know it's too late now, but are there no diff seals available now a days?

i have a feeling the internals are toast. and for $250 for something with fewer miles, i don't care. i might try and fix the old one and sell it to some 240sx drifto kid.

that howl is pretty annoying. i bet youre glad its gone

you have no idea. but what i like better is that the car drives properly now. i cant wait for the mountain roads this weekend in canada!
