Caliper painting

are the spray paint cans for your calipers going to look as good as the epoxy paint on applications? im wondering this b/c if i dont have to get a whole g2 system i will just get a can of that stuff and work it, but i want the best look and quality, if the spray cans give the same look as the paint on,then ill just go with the easier labor, but if its alot more beneficial to get the epoxy, then ill do that, just looking for some advice and opinions, thanks a lot!@!!!!!

I believe the caliper paint cans that you can buy look just as good. I've seen many caliipers painted using the cans, but I haven't seen one with the epoxy that I know of. I do know that the spray can's look pretty good though, what color are you going for?

The epoxy paints are designed for ease of use. To apply the spray paint, the best method is to remove the caliper. In either case you'll be better served to clean the caliper as thoroughly as possible. The epoxy paint might only need two coats. With spray paint you'll probably have to use several coats because it's applied thinly and it doesn't always cover as well as when you apply paint by hand. With spray paint you'll also have to take care that you don't get paint in the places you don't want it, like the pistons, seals, and related braking surfaces. With the epoxy, it'll be easier to avoid these areas since you'll be applying the paint by hand with a brush or sponge.
To finish off the painting and to keep the paint looking shiny and for easy cleaning, I suggest using a clear coat. A few coats of clear coat afterwards will give you a good shine. It'll also protect the actual paint from brake dust. Look for the clear coats that have a high gloss for that extra shiny look.

wouldn't the clear coat peal under the heat??? i know you can get hi temp spray, but clear coat i dunno about

Riz Z Speed 02-13-2004 03:26 PM

I do believe that they're available. Last time I was in an automotive super store they had like a whole wall of different types of spray paint. I'd imagine that hi temp clear coat would be available. If not, It'd be a real good idea. Dontcha think?:p

Z_WRECKER 02-13-2004 03:32 PM

i agree with that. i am gonna have to repaint mine... i have mine red, with golden nissan on it...looks pretty sweet, all the stupid people ask me if i've upgraded my breaks, and i say..um....sure did ( repinting your calipers is an upgrade in some way ;) )

Riz Z Speed 02-13-2004 03:35 PM

visual only. Now who's being rude. Lying to newbs like that. What's wrong with you? You should be ashamed of yourself!:p

emo236 02-13-2004 04:24 PM

that's the same as a type R emblem on a civic...claiming to have upgraded breaks just because you can!

Z_WRECKER 02-13-2004 08:05 PM

oh come on... i just mess with them for a bit... i tell them they are stock.. i don't lie... i was raised to be respectful, and honest :) Come on guys no need to jump on me all the time

emo236 02-13-2004 11:23 PM

I'm just messing with you...and your calipers sound like they;d look pretty good.

IT takes a little maturity to make fun of yourself and feel secure about it.

Z_WRECKER 02-15-2004 01:13 PM

they do look good Emo. :) i like them, and when i am changing my break pads i put cardboard on them so i don't damage the paint when i push the caliper pistons back in...and 300zxboi it's not that kind of jumping ;) :D :)

What kind of jumping are you talking about?

300zxBoi 02-15-2004 09:03 PM

lol...good stuff

Riz Z Speed 02-15-2004 09:11 PM

What kind of colors would you guys suggest for coloring calipers besides basic red?

emo236 02-15-2004 11:24 PM

black is always good. Not flashy, but classy, black with the silver Nissan that is. Oh, and bright yellow! JK:p

typeaproduction 02-16-2004 06:35 AM

i plan on painting my calipers red. My cars red, and cosmetically i think the red calipers will probly look most appealing.... what other colors do you think would look goood???????????

Z_WRECKER 02-16-2004 07:22 AM

never mind... i'll try to explain, and i will just digg myself in deeper and deeper...and not that kind of deeper :D you pervs:)

emo236 02-16-2004 08:30 AM

wrecker...I'm confuzed...typea, black would also look good, but red will look good as well.

91zxtt 02-16-2004 09:02 AM

Stick with red or black. You could maybe get away with a real dark blue. That may look nice. I like that color on cars, but I've never seen it on calipers. Nothing screams rice like yellow calipers, IMHO.

Z_WRECKER 02-17-2004 03:04 PM

or fluorescent green :) :D like that eclipse on F&F... i wouldn't mind a gsx ;)

BASEBALL248 02-18-2004 08:40 AM

Rizz...I believe your Z is Cherry Red Pearl (same as mine). I painted the calipers with heat resitant Black, then flat filed off the paint on the "Nissan" logo and final clear coated. Looks great.

I did a test paint on spare caliper with "red" but it clashed (butt ugly) with the cherry red body color.

91zxtt 02-18-2004 09:40 AM

That sounds like it came out real nice. What if you painted the caliper black and the nissan lettering red. That would probably look good also.

typeaproduction 02-18-2004 10:12 AM

you saying red calipers on a cherrry red pearl dosent look good? im wondering this cause im wanting to paint my calipers red.... on my cherry red car
