18x7.5in Rims

the rims that are the style that i like and the price that i can afford seem to all come in 18x7.5. what is the widest tire i can put in the rear? 245?

b300z 12-06-2004 11:23 AM

mine has 275's

91zxtt 12-06-2004 11:43 AM

That's what I have also. I've been told that 275 is the max.

CanyonCarver 12-06-2004 11:49 AM

So what is the aspect ratio of your 245's & 275's ?
Are the outside diameters appropo compared to stock?

91zxtt 12-06-2004 12:06 PM

The 275's are a bit bigger. I run 35 series tires. If I remember correctly, the 275/35/18's stood about 1/2" - 3/4" taller than the OEM rears. I just compared the two wheel/tires side by side. My oldtires were worn, so when new, the difference would be even less.

DanZ32 12-06-2004 03:53 PM

B & 91,
You guys are running 275's on a 7.5" wide rim?

So, my stupid question above assumes he is going to put 7.5's on the rear and if so, he can't get 275's. Not that you have that...what width are the wheels are you running with that rubber?

91zxtt 12-06-2004 08:45 PM

Oops. Missed that part. I don't think Superman could mount a 275/35 on a 7.5" wheel. Time to order Hooked on 'Phonics'.

Since you have a TT, I'm assuming that you're going to do some modifications down the road. 245's are fine for stock, but you will want to go larger with mods so that you can get better grip. I have 9' inch wide wheels, or maybe 9.5". F*ck, I don't know. I can't remember. I run either 8's & 9's or 8.5's and 9.5's (F/R). I guess I'm not much help on this one. :bump:

DanZ32 12-07-2004 10:43 AM

Naw, you're explanation is helpful. He now knows he can't go 275 on a 7.5 width wheel.

b300z 12-07-2004 02:56 PM

theyre probably 9.5 91

i have 17x8.5 in the front with 245/35/17
17x9.5 in the back with 275/30/17

Riz Z Speed 12-08-2004 02:40 AM

why would you want to go narrower than stock?

stock on NA's is 8" all around. TT's get 8"up front and 8.5" in rear.

I think you're right. I think I have 9" up front and 9.5" in the back. I would've gone with 10", but BBS didn't make the RC's for this car 10" wide. At least that's what I remember the Tire Rack telling me. Since I'm older now, my memory isn't what it used to be. :p

CanyonCarver 12-08-2004 11:52 AM

My rims have cast in numbers that say 16 x 7.5 JJ and see page #21 in the general info of the online manual
http://www.300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi :D

Riz Z Speed 12-09-2004 01:40 AM

I was half right.

My memory isn't what it used to be either. :D

phrozen209 12-11-2004 02:07 AM

if u need to rotate your tires and u have different sizes in the front and back, will it effect the way they are rotated?

You can't ........... or shouldn't.

b300z 12-11-2004 10:19 AM

yup
thats the only problem with getting different sized tires in front and back

91zxtt 12-12-2004 07:38 PM

^^^2nd. If you go with larger than 255's in the rear, then you can't rotate them. They won't fit up front. Anything is possible if you went with 255's or smaller in the rear, so you could rotate them, but the car would handle so miserably with larger tires on the front than in the rear that you would switch them back right away.

Riz Z Speed 12-13-2004 03:07 AM

Actually, it is possible to rotate the tires if you have different sizes in front from rear. It's a bit more difficult than regular rotation where all tire sizes are the same.
First you can only rotate from right to left and vice versa.
Second you'd have to remove and remount each tire to do so. If you have stock TT wheels, you can't exchange rims since they're directional and the tires would have to be removed and remounted cuz they're directional as well.
There you have it the long and difficult and not worth doing way of rotating the tires of different sized wheels on the same car.
I recommend a shop that has a tire mounting machine if you decide to do this.

b300z 12-13-2004 10:12 AM

or reccomend not doing it at all

Riz Z Speed 12-14-2004 01:22 AM

that's why i said "if".
it's kinda implied.

phrozen209 12-14-2004 02:24 AM

If I do the exchange to CDN $$, that's about $2500. With G-Force T/A's, I'd say you did pretty well for yourself. :)

Copper727 12-18-2004 05:26 PM

Golly geez!! $2000 sounds a little too rich for my broke butt! I actually really, really want to get some Volk GT-C's for my Z32, but damn they're even more expensive!! As I was browsing the Internet the other day, however, I saw these ADR chromes with staggered setup for only $500 a set brand new....and since my buddy has hookup for tires, I'm really tempted! But if anything, I'll probably wait until spring time....since my car will be hibernating this winter and won't be able to enjoying anything new until then...
