I replaced all of the exterior trim 9 years ago, except the quarter window trim, which was not available. It had deteriorated so badly the chrome was exposed, so I tried my hand at refreshing it today. I'm posting my experience and tips to give back to the forum,
All of the videos and write ups I found said to pry up on the Quarter window trim to remove it. So that's what I did... only to discover afterwards that you can just slide it forward toward the door, without prying gouges into the paint or breaking the clips. One of the clips popped off while prying and it was a PITA to get it back under the window glass. Tilting the clip and pressing a screwdriver against the inside edge got it to slip in nicely... work the screwdriver along the top inside edge until it's all seated under the quarter glass. I then set to work on the mouldings. Most of the old paint peeled away easily, but much of it required scraping and sanding. I taped off the rubber bits and repainted the mouldings with black Plasti-Dip. I slid (not pressed) the mouldings back on and saw that it matches the other trim fairly well!
The other OEM trim bits are starting to fade after 9 years, so I think I'll do them too.
Old trim peeling away Most came off easy, rest will be scraped and sanded Taped off, ready to paint Several coats of Plasti-Dip Good as new Not a bad match A little shiny in the sun The Land Rover is fun to drive too!
