Z31 Vibration Damper removal.

Need suggestions on how to lock the flywheel so I can remove the bolt holding the damper to the crankshaft. Is there a special tool to lock the flywheel? Nissan manual does not mention the damper. Thanks.

put it in gear. get an impact wrench

if you would really like answers that would help you and avoid flames give the following info when you post: year of car, n/a or turbo engine, stick or slushbox, digital or analog dash. Most of us can tell by the year what model you have ie 85T is a turbo z31. Z cars come in many flavors and they are all different. example 84,85,86 Z31's pretty comparable. there were changes in 87,88,89. in addition 300ZX can refer to two completly different cars the Z31 and the Z32. No mindreaders here the more info you can post the more likely you get a cogent useful answer. The cars with L engine (straight six) changed almost yearly from their introduction. A 240Z and and a 280Z have similarities but they can also have wide variance.

It sounds like the engine is out of the car? As Roger said, more info will help us help you faster.

If it's in car, just use a breaker bar against the ground, remove coil to distributor wire, and quickly tap the key to rotate the engine just enough to break the bolt free.

If it's out of the car, drop the oil pan and use a 2x4 between the crank counterweight and side of block.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for my next post. Is it safe to do that with the front end off of the ground? BTW - '86 NA, MT, Analog Dash, T-Top, GL Base Coupe.
