This is the first time I replace a transmission. I got it off, and I'm ready to start putting the new one on.

The rear oil seal, does it go in between the transmission and the dust cover, or does it go trans-dust cover-seal?

I'm assuming the side with the spring faces the transmission.

I already have the FSM, and I already looked it up.

FS5R90A (BW T5)

In section MT P.20 I.31

It doesn't really show wether the seal itself goes in between the tranny and the dust cover, or if it goes in between the propeller shaft and the dust cover.

Although MT-29 has an illustration of the seal being installed, and it looks like it goes between the propeller shaft and the cover. The text says you can replace it with the transmission still on the vehicle, that also supports my assumptions.

The reason I was confused is when I pulled the old one off, I had to use the cover off of it, and the old seal was between the tranny and the cover, and it was different from the one I got at the auto parts store.

if I remember correctly, the seal was part of the dust cover. If it is possible to seperate them, you'll want to put the dust cover on first, then the seal on after that. 99% sure that's how it works. Seriously though, you should be able to look at the parts in your hand and figure it out.

Yeah, cover on then the seal. I was pretty sure that's how it went.

Thats how I did it anyway, if it's wrong oh well, I'll just have to do it all over again.

I also had to replace the speedometer gear in my "new" tranny. I used the one from the bad one. Took a lot less than I thought it would.
