Tranny swap

I know a lot of you are probably groaning and wondering why. I just want to make sure that the info I found in an old post still holds true. The tranny in my '87 N/A is shot. It's only quiet in 4th and 5th gear and a rebuild or replacement has been recommended. It's a T5 coming out of an '85 Turbo. They're willing to throw in the drive shaft.....

Originally posted by groovygroovy666 I have an 85 turbo and an 85 n/a. The tranny on the turbo is slowly dying. The turbo has the auto while the tranny in the N/A is the 5 speed that was rebuilt right before the motor died. What I'm wondering is can I swap the trannys. I've read that it can't be done but nothing says why. So can it be done?

Yes. The engine block is exactly the same. That means all the mounting bolts are exactly the same. You'll need the body mounts for the transmission and the driveshaft for the particular transmission you are using.

Is this still true???? Thanks all.

it can be, you have to swap in the master clutch cylinder with the slave that goes on the tranny. ecu wise you should be ok could be wrong though. but you will have to change the flange on the diff. the na flange on the diff is different then the turbo flange. the flange is what connects to the driveshaft.

Thanks. I'm just figuring if I can spend $300 on the tranny and Driveshaft upfront that's better than $1500 to $1600 to rebuild the tranny that's in her now.....

If I'm not mistaken, the later model manual trannies are better though. They're closer to what's in the Z32's, right? Yeah, the FS5R30A is a stronger transmission than the T5, from what I've read.

So this is an ancient threat I'm resurrecting, sorry. Anyway, I just picked up a brand new FS5R30A tranny off ebay. I always thought that this trans was built by Nissan. Then I found this video and now I'm confused. Transmission Gears Video ~ Nissan Pathfinder ~ BeerGarage.com

Be unconfused. I found an online publication called "The Dime Quarterly" pandering to Five & Dime owners that contained an article titled "Nissan Transmission Identification Guide". This is a great article. It really discusses the evolution of Nissan transmissions, with an emphasis on the manual boxes. If interested, go to https://docs.google.com/folderview?i...RjODA5ODA1YjU1 . Look in Volume 11, Issue No.4.

Great find ken99. I'm going to save this info and keep it handy. And I'm not confused anymore. Thanks!
