Pump under bumper?

I was replacing my front bumper last night and I noticed there were a few wires disconnected. One was to my horn and the other two were to a pump. I hooked them back up and when I turn the key on the pump continously pumps and then when i crank the car it cuts off. It is on the passenger side of the car(1985 300zx turbo) and it is located right under the frame of the bumper, directly above the intercooler. Does anyone have a clue to what this is?

to run a lot of the things in the car (cruise, climate control, etc) you need vacuum. NAs get this vacuum from the engine. But on a turbo, when you're boosting, you have pressure. The vacuum pump creates the vacuum for these items.

I can reverse the wires on this pump and it works either way, does it matter which way I have it hooked up? If so, what is the right way? there is a blue wire and a black wire on one side and it came out of the connector so I used some speaker wire connectors to hook it back up.

it would matter what way

the pump would suck one way and not the other.

ok so if i have it where air blows out the tube coming from the pump to the open air it is the right way

yes, because then it's pulling air from the vacuum components, or, creating vacuum (what they need). Pumping air into vacuum components will make them not work properly, if at all.

I've been doing alot of work on my car and i've had that pump off for a long time. So I went to hook it back up and I couldn't find where the hose went that connected to it. Any body know where the hose comes from so that I can locate it...

And on another note, It might be related to that pump, I have really low oil pressure. When I cold start it gets up to about 30 psi, but after warming up it drops to 0. I know the gauge is working becuase it starts running badly and I can start to hear the lifters tick. I was wondering where to start troubleshooting. Thats why I was putting that vac pump back on. I checked all of the other vacuum lines and they appear to be fine.

I have an 84 turbo automatic.

Now this might be a good reason my cruise control is very slow to come on.

The previous ower had it disconnected and told me it was the headlamp washer pump.

Now I feel a bit sheepish.

why couldn't you just tell me where the hose comes from? you obviously know...

Well, anybody have an answer for this? I've been waiting for a reply for weeks now. I just want to know where the hose for the vaccuum pump comes from. Because I cannot locate it anywhere.

I have seen this diagram before. Maybe im "retarded" but I cannot locate the hose that goes to the pump. Maybe if I new where the hose connects to on the vacuum tank, then i'd be able to figure it out. But all i can tell from that diagram is that the vacuum pump is connected to the vacuum tank.

http://users2.ev1.net/~jboykin/vaclines.htm

And on the actual picture of the vac tank it only shows one side of it. Which hose is it exactly that goes to the pump?

thanks Bum, but im in need of further explanation.

"it is located right under the frame of the bumper, directly above the intercooler"
