Eratic idle and accelaration
Hi All,
I have an 86 turbo.
The turbocharger recently got bad. Leaks, noise, etc. Sounded like a harley. After about 2 months of all the noise, I bought a new turbocharger (oem) and had it replaced. The car sounds like new.
However, about 1 week BEFORE I replaced it, the car started running very poorly. The idle is extremely eratic. It goes from 800 down to 400. Usually though it is coughing at around 500 to 600. I have a M/T, so it should be at 700 and smooth.
On the rare occasion that it is at 700, it still feels rough. When I accelarate, it stumbles a little, and then gets better.
I only mentioned the turbo issue because I thought that maybe the bad turbo caused some other problem.
Anyway, I checked the ECU and got code 21. This is a problem with the "ignition signal". I have an extra power transistor and ignition coil, so I swapped them, and still no changes.
I disconnected the o2 sensor, and not change. Got even worse.
I disconnected the throttle position sensor, and it actually got a little better, but then the weird thing is that when I accellerate, the engine stays at around 2500 rpm for a few seconds and then goes down slowly.
I then disconnected the cylinder head temperature sensor, and no change.
Please help!
Thank you.
George

Erratic accel problem
check to make sure your Air flow meter tubing has not come loose or leaks. also, wouldnt hurt to check the AFM to make sure its functional. could need a new distributor if the contact points are worn. make sure ur timing is right also. (20 degrees +-2) If your wires are making poor contact or making too much resistance, that could Also be the problem.

i kindof have the same problem, it idles like crap, but once I give it some gas, it runs like a champ. I am hearing a buzz also, when this buzz is heard, the engine changes. I am at a real loss here.

my 86 turbo did that for a while--so did my 50 ae--we did afm, injector cleaning and replaced ALL cracked and broked vacuum hoses--even the ones hidden from view--they both run great now. also--if the battery has been disconnected, run car x30 minutes or more so the ecu can relearn how to behave.(some z guru spoke that one--not from my own brain)
what my 86 did. i got someone else to drive it--he could start it--redheaded*itch wouldn't restart for me ever--one try for me per day. so, after it finally got running, and time on the ecu--PERFECT. it is in sacto looking for 153k checkup. where can she go??? she also has a shimmy with brake application which needs sorting out. specialty shop in sacto, ANYONE????
