Boost Controller

I just bought an 85 z31 turbo, and its the first turbo car i have ever owned, so needless to say i am new to turbos. I have read the turbo faq page at z31.com already and was wondering if any manual boost controller will work, or do I need to find a certain one. Also, the turbo faq page said most manual boost controllers come with a new pov, but so far i havent found one.

you dont even need that, i used a throttle return spring to up the boost on mine, just be carefull when playing with boost and be sure to get a good quality boost gauge, now to answer your question... yes any manual boost controler will work, but an electronic one will work even better, did you meen BOV or POV? the pop off valve is their so if the waste gate sticks it releases anything more then 8psi, a blow off valve are the ricey but needed to prevent compressor surge, by releasing excess pressure when the TB is closed.

if this didnt answer any of your questions just let me know and ill sober up a little and try again.

No i meant pov, I know what they do, I am just wondering where to find one. By the way, what would you say is the most acurate boost gauge, and where can I get it?

Greddy makes an adjustable POV. HKS does (or used to) as well.

Autometer gauges are good.

Does it have to be a certain pov or will any one do? (As long as it regulates the right amount of psi of coarse)

if it fits the threads on the manifold, it will work.

Did you have the intake modified??? I just got the motor in the 510 and I need an intake that doesn't hang over the rear of the motor...

I took my POV off, and just used a BOV...

That's just a pic I found by doing a quick search on google. I'm sure the guys on the 510 forums will know what plenum to use... check out www.the510realm.com

POV and BOV have two separate functions... deleting one for the other doesn't work.

best bet is probably the 87-88 200sx SE plenum. also look at the old Maxima plenum

you do realize that a POV and a BOV have completely different functions, right?

turboZ87.300 Dec 6, 2007 07:56 PM

Yeah I know... put is the boost goes over 15psi or so, the BOV will open...

Also I did look at old Maxima plenums, I didn't see one that would work. I'm going to look at the pick/ups and the 200sx... the thing I liked about this one is the intake pick up is on the passenger side. Thanks

:075:

a BOV will NOT protect your engine from an overboost situation. run a proper POV.

^^^ Buahahha... we're on a "same thought" roll tonight.

great minds and such....:D

I got the car with no POV, I just didn't think I needed one, this is my 1st turbo car, as long as I don't run more than 15psi I should be good...???

what if your boost controller fails?? BOOM! get a POV.

turboZ87.300 Dec 6, 2007 08:16 PM

Okay... okay... I'll look for a POV that I can adjust... BTY what is the max boost of a 87 300zx turbo??? I put the boost up to 20psi only for 1 run... then I put it back to 13psi max...

20psi?? i am surprised it survived. and that was a waste. 12psi is about teh tops before the turbo loses efficiency. over 15psi you create more heat than power, not to mention put your engine in danger of blowing up.

turboZ87.300 Dec 6, 2007 08:43 PM

It was cold out, and I didn't hold it to the 20psi boost for longer than 5-10 seconds at a time...

"and that was a waste"???

yes, because at 20psi the efficiency of that turbo is shot to hell. you are just creating a ton of heat. and the stock fuel system can not supply enough gas for that level of boost, so you were running way lean.

turboZ87.300 Dec 6, 2007 09:04 PM

That one reason why I backed off to 13psi of boost... Low octaine ping... LOL
