'87 Z31 Timing has to be all the way advanced to run well?

It's me again. :) I have two friends, one with a turbo, one with an NA like mine, all three of us noticed that to get our cars to idle and run optimally we have to advance our timing pretty much all the way and tighten down both screws on the fuel/air unit. This can't be right can it?! Is there a pre existing thread that might point us in the right direction?

We have checked TDC multiple times and when cylinder one is all the way up all the marks line up (Except on MY car where the top two are exactly right but the bottom one is like 6 inches off?) Ideas?

How much of an effect will aftermarket intake and exhaust have on my car running right? I have both.

How many degrees BTDC is it when the dizzy is maxed out? Hopefully you've been using a timing light...

Marks? Which marks?

Putting the light on it this evening, I'll take some pics it's easier than trying to explain it as an automotive dunce. :)

Didn't get the light on it last night. The "marks" I'm refering to are the timing marks on the top two pulleys. The balancer is the one that's mark is way off, my question is would that make a difference even if the top pulleys are exactly on TDC? It's my understanding that the balancer pulley can only go in one way so I'm not sure how the mark could be off. Am still waiting on the timing gun. Maybe the balancer pulley is off a different year and the mark is wrong?
