Hug a Recycler Today!
Thought I would re-post what I added to the end of a WTB looking for a Z31 Nissan OEM part. In frequent trips to my Nissan dealership for parts, I have about a 40% success rate these days. That means about 60% of the time Nissan does not have the part available - even if I want to pay their price. I know there are guys who want only NEW parts, OEM or not, it has to be NEW - but that isn't always practical. And where possible it costs more. My 86na would definitely be dead now if I didn't find another source.
Plan B: Used recycled OEM parts. There are still Z31s on recyclers' lots today in 2014 but they are disappearing. Maybe the new interest in Z31 models among younger guys will make recyclers hold on to them longer - but not likely. Recycling rules say a car older than 25 yrs has too small a market for its parts. They need the yard space for '90s-and-up cars - so they are crushing their Z31s. They might salvage the ECU, maybe a motor or a transmission if they have the space and it's still good. But the thousands of other OEM parts are crushed: mechanical, electrical, interior, exterior, body, suspension. Gone in 2 minutes. Anybody with a Z31 that you want to get parts or just set aside parts for needs to check the recyclers in your area. To get a good list of them, go to car-part.com and search for a common part (‘84-‘89 battery, radio, alternator, etc.) and sort the results by 'distance' from your zip code. They sort out with yard name, address, phone. Call your area yards and find out if they still have an actual Z31 on the lot or just parts. If you ask nice, a recycler will let you onto the lot to check out the remains. Bring a yellow crayon and mark your parts. Negotiate a total price for what you want and they will remove them. My best recycler around here (there are 5 or 6 others) lets me do the work myself (his insurer would dump him). Drove away last time with a trunk full of mech and elec and misc body parts for $90. A mint Z31 steering column with all attachments for $50. The light switch alone is $130 new. Anyway, the used-to-be-perfect sister of that Z31 you love so much is heading for a smelter. Ask the 240/260/280Z guys about getting parts when they really need 'em. They go crazy just locating a part - and they pay more. You can save big bucks over OEM and aftermarket, have good used parts there when you need 'em - and clean up the environment a little, too. Everybody wins. But move on it soon. Time is running out for these incredible Z31s. It’s 2014 already and they look more crush-able to recyclers every day. :paranoid: |
For all the z31 folks in the Atlanta area there is also z cars of Atlanta www.zcaratlanta.com they have a decent amount of parts but like most it's shrinking daily. They pull the parts for you but plan on being there a while as they won't pull the part until you are there with money in hand
