Was it overheating before you flushed the radiator & took out the thermostat?

Since air rises in water, they will RISE to the top of the radiator fill point too. You can leave the radiator cap off, and see a rush of coolant when your thermostat opens (well... you can't because you removed yours).

Lets cut to the chase... leave the rad cap off & let the car idle to running temp. That will get all the air up to the top. Then get an infrared thermometer (go buy one if you don't have one) and take a reading at the thermostat housing, then again at the radiator OUT hose. There should be a 25-30*F temp drop. If not, your radiator isn't doing it's job.

And freaking put the thermostat back in.

NEVER listen to that person again for any car advice ever. Person is obviously an idiot when it comes to cars.

NismoPick got it right on burping the system.
