87 Sensor Light on dash- need to turn it off!

HI:

This is my 3rd Z31 and never had the issue. Obviously I hit 30K..I bought the car with 24K on it 2 years ago. There is NO wire to disconnect with any label; there is no relay to reset with the glove box removed. I have looked too many times to even count trying to find the wire to disconnect.
I have looked in Chilton manual, online & everywhere..
Short of taking a screw driver and gouging it out..something about the 87 model must be different. How do I easily get it to turn off?

Thx and glad to be on Zdriver. I was a long time member on Z31
old handle was Donn 88NA & 84AE

Welcome to ZDriver!

So you've done this to the T?

Nissan Z31 300ZX Warning Lights

On the right side of the relay you'll feel a rubber-covered button/plunger. Press it in and you'll hear the relay spring reset. Turn the ignition switch on, the sensor light should be off. Reassemble.

After 90,000 miles you disconnect the light. Remove the panel just below the steering wheel (at the drivers' knees). On the left you will see a group of wires taped together going into a wiring harness. Taped to this group of wires will be another wire (green/yellow I think) with a plug (white plug) - this is the wire for the sensor light - unplug it.

This description (or something close to it) can be found in the Haynes manual - look under Oxygen Sensor in the index.

Thank you, but I have seen this note all over and even in the Chilton.
There is NO wire with this description and I have looked very carefully. There is a single wire going into a white connecter.
However, disconnecting does NOT turn off the light. It is NOT green & yellow. The sensor came on exactly at 30K so it must be the timing mechanism.

I can look there all day and not find the elusive green & yellow wire. It does not seem to exist in the 87.

This was all to get it inspected?

The sensor light won't make it fail... Unless your state has a really unique inspection program, the only warning light failure is when a 1996+ car has it's CEL (check engine light) illuminated. Pre-96 the CEL can be on and it will still pass. My 94 Geo Metro's CEL is always lit because of the EGR. It still passes.

Anyway, I'm sure when AZ-ZBum logs on next, he will have specifics for you.

I read somewhere that a Sensor light will flunk you in NJ. Because of my older cars & the problems they had I have gotten but gun-shy of inspections. I wanted to make sure I was not going to have to return. But, I wanted the light off anyway and I needed to be inspected by months end.
You'll be happy to note, it was because of searching though the posts here I saw a guy say he popped the bulb out..which gave me the inspiration to try it.
