Setting timing. Need some help
 

It all started when i removed the dist. to get at the bypass coolant hose underneath it. I never marked the relationship of the dist. to the motor soooo the problem began.

I'm new to these motors but catch on quick and read into anything I can. I have pretty much read the FSM front to back and it really got me familiarized with the car. When I finally got to setting the timing the correct way i ran into a few problems.

First, I lined up the dot below the rotor gear with the protrusion just above it when installing. I also followed the "good book" on setting the #1 cylinder to 0 degrees, TDC. Everything seemed to line up just like in the FSM so I was happy. I slapped the dist. cap back on and put the hold down bolt back in and started it up. With the Idle up disconnected and at 700+- RPM I checked the timing. It was advanced, A LOT, we're talking off the dial and then some. I twisted the dist. as far as it would go and that only got me to 28+- degrees BTDC. Factory calls for 20.

So, i took the dist. out and retarded a tooth. Bolted everything back in and was happy to find out that i could set the timing to dead nuts 20 degrees. I could tell something wasn't happy though. I reved it and it bogged and a load pop came though the intake filter. Somehow the timing is set "correctly" put it is firing very late now. That is what I don't understand. If someone could chime in a pour some knowledge on me that would be great. Thanks, Shane

Parts replaced: NGK plugs, NGK wires, Duralast Dist. Cap

It was probably fine, but your timing light might be crap.

I'm going to check again today. I also found that many of the electrical connections are corroded or crack from the previous owner just ripping the connections off, such as the CHTS plug which is basicly sitting on the sender. QUESTION: Does the CHTS use a fuel injector connection?
