intake? just new K&N filter or ram air?
I am wondering if i should just get a K&N filter to replace mine now or if i should replace the whole intake with a ram air pod. I have an 85 300ZX NA and I think it can handle a pod and ive seen a lot of Z's with them. Input?

what pod are you talking about? If you mean the hood scoop found on the 84 and 85 turbos, that is to help cool the turbo. The air intake is at the very front of the engine bay. Someone did make a ram air system for their Z31. pictures and description of MegaSuck.

You could also go with a K&N FIPK (Fuel injection performance kit). I believe the part number is 57-6002 at KN's site.

I would like to put a cone filter in to replace the stock air filter set up. Is there enough air flow to make that worthwhile without having to cut a hole in my bumper.

Sure. You might want to block off the area between the lower shroud and the upper crossmember with some sheet aluminum. There is enough air flow. I removed the aux lights on my 85t since they have no practical value to me. And then you can use the wiring and switch for some real driving lights.
