Holy smoke!

After some internal debate, I've decided to risk ridicule and ask a question. The two rear-most screw holes that anchors the console to the hump opens up to the great outdoors. Having never seen this before, I'm wondering if this remotely possible if that's the way it came and, if not, what I might do about it. The car is a new-to-me '84 base model. The floor as seen from under the car is in otherwise good shape.

Thanks in advance!

Yes they open up in the tunnel above the drive shaft. There are many screws in cars that do the same thing. It is not a problem. Keep the screws in to seal the hole.
