Engine Gasp during acceleration

In my 84 NA I just recently purchased I have a stall when I accelerate.

The engine cranks and idles steady, but gasps for (air or fuel) when I accelerate then catches up and runs a little rough. I have changed the spark plugs/wires PVC valve, checked distributor cap/rotor, and whent to change the air filter and noticed that there wasn't one!! I thought that maybe the engine was receiving too much air. I put in an air filter but the vehicle still stalls.

Any suggestions as to where to concentrate next. Thanks in advance.

check timing and check for air leaks.

Thanks for the help AZ-ZBUM.

On the air leak ... (hoping not to sound too stupid) Should that mainly be a visual check on or near the airbox and intake hose or is there a more quantitative method for checking for air leaks.

I did notice that the hose between the resonance chamber and the airbox has some cracking in it however it didn't appear to be all of the way through, (still needs replacement I suppose).

Just didn't know if there was another way to check air leaks that may hot be so subjective to a visual check. Thanks

any time there are air leaks between the air flow meter and the actual intake ports, there will be a problem of some kind.

Looking for air leaks will require a bit of hunting and fishing.

Open hood.
Start car.
Listen for whistling sounds indicating air leaks.

It's harder to do with a fan on the car making all sorts of noises, but you'll know it when you hear it.

Also, since your idle is okay, it might be happening only because there is a load on the engine. This means the leak is probably small. Grab hoses and check for cracks. Possible problems include vacuum lines.

Now that you mention it... (vacuum leak)

I did note that before I brought the car home the other day that the heater control valve was not hooked up to a vacuum line and the vac line in front of it coming from a a "T" connection was too short to connect to it and was hissing. (I assume this line broke and that is where this line should be going)

So it got taped up for the time being, and is not currently hissing, but is still disconnected. I assume that this could cause these issues and is one of the problems you were talking about.
