Driveshaft Problems
Driveshaft Problems
When im driving in my 88 turbo i experience a hella lot of vibration inside the vehicle and goes away when i reach high speeds. Im guessing its the driveshaft. any thoughts? If it is, any one know where i can get a reasonable used or possibly new one maybe aluminum other than the z store? They are wanting way tooooo MUCH for one. Thanks!
Well i know in trucks that if a u-joint is bad it would cause a lot of vibration inside the cab. Now knowing that and knowing that you cant just replace the u-joint in the 88 ya have to replace the whole shaft, leaves me to believe it is the driveshaft.
Sorry i should of been more clear. I did get my wheels balanced 2 weeks back, with alignment, lathe'd rotors, new bearings, brake pads, and wheel seals for the rear. I will keep in mind the bushings. I did over look that so i will start there and let ya know where Im at on that. But just in case if it is what i suspect on the driveshaft, where could i get one reasonably? thanks guys

I cant remember what service manual i read it from but it stated that if the u-joints are bad that the whole driveshaft assembly needed to be replaced due to the u-joints are pressed in and unable to replace just the u-joint. I want to say its the Nissan Service Manual. I tore one out of my parts car to see what i am looking at. And i noticed the u-joint has no stamped number on it making nearly impossible to find an exact fit. I work at a parts store and let me tell ya that i dread when customers bring a u-joint in and say "i need this exact one" but cant tell ya what mods have been done to the drivetrain. That is a needle in a haystack! u-joints suck! there's millions of em out there!
Lets say ya right on about taking it to a shop to replace that u-joint. Would it not violate the integrity and balance of the driveshaft? Im curious.

No, because they normally would balance it afterwords. I snapped a rear ujoint on my 240 when I was running the sbc setup and i just brought them the driveshaft and they put a new ujoint in and balanced it. Out the door for $120.
now the u-joint im looking for would that be listed in the micro-fiche? i mean exactly what it's supposed to be. Ive looked and came across nothing unless i looked over it but i highly doubt that. Chances are the part number is not gonna be stamped on the u-joint itself and if it was the number on the joint could be changed or no longer listed. About 80% of all u-joints from the 80's and older models have been changed, no longer made, or an aftermarket company picked it up and under a new number which makes it difficult.
Did the shop ya took ya shaft to inform ya on the ujoint they used on ya 240? Im just wondering maybe the driveshaft shop in my area may be able to decipher what u-joint to use. My only concern if it will actually hold up. Im just a little worried and thinking screw it replace the whole shaft.
GOOD NEWS! I called up the Z STORE and spoke with a gentleman that was very familiar and a collector of z cars. I explained my problem about the driveshaft and u-joint. He confirmed that nissan did indeed make the driveshaft and u-joint as one assembly. He also added on the OEM driveshaft if the u-joint goes out then the whole shaft had to be replaced.
Now here is the good news. The driveshaft they sell has the removable u-joint where if the joint goes bad you could service only the joint and not replace the whole shaft. In addition he said they have the u-joint by itself to purchase along with the yoke. He also said they have another u-joint for sale that comes with a grease zert.
The price of the driveshaft assembly is $299.95 plus a couple of bucks in shipping. Now i believe thats an awesome deal rather going to the shop and getting ya used one fixed and u-joint pressed back in. i found a local shop and it was coming out to roughly $200 bucks. I think if ya spending 200 already why not another 100 and get a new one with this awesome feature. Ya can upgrade to this shaft and service just the u-joint and not worry about the shaft at all. Plus as old as they are why not just replace it and get that great feeling of puttin the power back on the asphalt!?

Good to hear that they make a drive shaft now with u-joints you can replace, i had u-joints go bad in my stock drive shaft so i bought a aftermarket drive shaft (bad idea) it broke after 1 night or racing so i had a custom drive shaft made with u-joints from a chevy 1/2 ton truck for $250 at a local shop and it works great!!!
