dont know this stuff

hey im new to this forum and to my 85 turbo 300zx as well, so i might need some help from u experts around here. when i floor it in first gear it passes the redline and goes up to like almost 7 rpm's. I had a mustang and it switched right at the redline, and the z switches way past the redline. i wanna know if this is normal or not, or if it will mess up my car. thanx for ur help everone.

Okay, I am going to go ahead and assume that your car is an automatic like mine. This is normal if you have your transmission in POWER ON mode (the little switch by your shifter). If you switch that to power off mode, your car will basicly be in an overdrive mode and will shift way earlier. You probably aren't used to a car that actually revs. Big american V8s don't rev. Smaller japanese six cylinders do.

that button has nothing to do with the 1st gear, it only turns the o/d on and off. mine too is an auto, and has never been to 7k rpm. it shifts automatically at redline. there may be something amiss in the tranny, which wont be surprising. the autos in these cars are rather shitty.

yea i think something is wrong with the transmission cuz the guy that had this car before put in a transmission on this car because its was messing up. is it in overdrive when it has the light that says on or is it off, cuz i floored it when it didnt say on. thanx for ur help everyone.

looks like it might be time to swap it out for a manual then. :)

i do want a manual transmission but i think its too much work changing from a a/t to a m/t, plus there r always problems with it after doin that. got a question, is the a/t slower than the m/t, and if it is, how much slower. i got a turbo.

Zcarninja Sep 10, 2003 08:45 PM

since you have a turbo, a m/t is most benificial. its not as hard as you think. ill be converting mine to manual when i do a turbo swap. problems? only if you didnt do it right. many people have done the swap.:)
