Common Problems/Price Range

Hey, guys. I'm looking for a cheap, fun car to drive cross country in this summer and there seem to be a lot of Z31s for around $1000 (give or take a hundred or two) and was just curious if this price was indicitive of them not being very reliable or something. I'm coming from mostly a Toyota background and all the Supras from that era are more like $3k-$4k for one in average condition. This Z, for example, is $1k (or best offer!): http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/1615310514.html

Is there something I should be asking this guy that would be a common problem with these cars? Anything you guys could do to help would be much appreciated!

Just do the basics for any used car...

Ask the history & maintenance records... were all fluids kept changed and full?
Title?
Can you personally inspect it? If so, do a thorough inspection.

My personal opinion on this part, but, cheap car + cross country drive = disaster waiting to happen. :D

Welcome to Z Driver!!!:icon_super:

I come from a toyota background too and i'll tell ya, ya wont go back! Before ya hit the road its very easy to get all what ya need from here to fix up ya 85T.

Just be sure and do a thorough inspection like Nismo said. Important one is history and 360 degree inspection from top to bottom. Good luck and hope to see ya around.

Supras are rarer why they cost more. z31 is reliable once you get it up to snuff but be prepared to learn a few things. I bought a 85t with 220k on it and drove it 5 years with few problems. Figure on changing bushings, tie rod ends and ball joints unless you like a car that wanders the road. Shocks are nice but bushings a must.

This should be a big clue.

"It is a real fixer upper. It is a project but does run, and does drive fine."
