brake light stays on?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,
I have a brake light that intermittently (but mostly) stays on even when the hand brake is down. It even stays that way when I try to manually reset the hand brake. First of all, is that indicator going to prevent me from passing SMOG next time I try to do so? Secondly, does anyone know how to remedy this situation, preferably w/o having to visit a mechanic? |
you talking the brake lights at the rear or the one on the dash says the handbrake is on? if the rear the switch isn't being activated correctly by the brake pedal. if the one on the dash you are low on fluid or the hand brake switch isn't being activated correctly. helps when you give correct details.

Hi Rogerz,
It it the brake light on my dashboard (as shown in my picture). I will definitely check the brake fluid. Thanks. |
Look at the brake pedal assembly, there are two contact switches. The switch contacts the brake pedal arm on to a small round rubber pop in button. They break all the time and this allows the brake lights to stay on.

Thanks for the responses. Adding more brake fluid (I put in a few ounces but it wasn't obvious when to stop) did the trick.

Your brake fluid level may be deceptive. Just because the level appears to be OK does not mean that its at the proper level. I have had to continue adding fluid even after the fluid appears in the chamber until it reaches a higher level. If the level continues to go down after adding, you may need to add more fluid. If you have a small leak in an area of the brake system and the level was never full, you will be back in a few days adding more fluid. If you get the level to a good point, you will not have to add fluid for a while.
