Adjustable suspension

I have the opportunity of getting a suspension control box for our Zs suspension dirt cheap. my question is I know that they changed the stiffness for the shocks on different years (like increasing the difference as the years went on) but is it okay for me to put one from a different year into my year? I guess I should just buy it and see if it works. my current one died. worth a try at l;east I guess.

I'm not sure this is relative to your post but on my 86 n/a z I noticed that the back of the car is lifted a good 3 inches from original factory make. I know that z's are known for easily rolling over the back tires from a take off (and even 2nd gear once your already moving) but I think that with the 3 inch extra lift it makes it spin out even more than it normally would. Any feedback?
