87 n/a won't start , need help..
Looking at this one for sale, 87 2 seater, red, black inside, t-tops, 5 sp. clean car. 146k. At a j-yard in my area. Can see the injector recall has been done and the car has a Nissan replacement battery. Appears to have been cared for. The car was a donation car the j-yard bought at auction with a crunched r f fender, fender has been replaced. Tried starting it a couple of times now but nothing happens. They said it started a few weeks ago and runs good. I used a jumper box and the car gets everything working with the jumper but does not attempt to start, turn the key and not even a click. Dig Dash, door chime lighting radio etc etc work but seems to have nothing at the starter. Waiting for them to charge a bttery so i can swap that out and retry. but it seems the jumper should start it. Any suggestions on what to check/try to get it started would be appreciated. I can pick it up fairly cheap but want to hear it run first, (of course). Any and all help appreciated......... Tom Wasney

bad solenoid? bad starter? try whacking the starter with a hammer (lug wrench works too if it's all that's handy). maybe ignition relay?
just some ideas.
Oh, don't forget to hold the clutch in ALL the way while starting. They started that little safety practice sometime around '87. Could be the switch for that is bad too...

Re: 87 n/a won't start , need help.. Nevermind!
Replaced the battery and found the + cable connection corroded. Cleaned it up, put in the battery and it started right up. The motor just purrs, everything seems to work on the car. I have to pump up one rear tire and test drive it to make sure the rear bushings are in good shape, i hope, changed them on my 88 and don't really feel like spending another 9 hours under a Z again. Only weird thing so far is the radio did not have much volume to it, turned it up all the way and it was not at all loud. Equalizer was on and lit up. Will worry about that later. Tom.
