'84 300ZX build thread

Hey all, new to this forum. In a few weeks I'll be buying a 1984 300ZX Turbo, I'm told it's one of the 50th anniversary edition 300ZX's. I'm pretty excited, but this car is rough. My sister's boyfriend bought it 2 years ago, screwed it over, and now he's selling it to me. I don't know mileage wise, but I have a few questions
1. What common issues should I look for in this car? Rust, wear, etc..
2. Digital instrument cluster doesn't work, or only parts of it work, or something like that. Easy fix?
3. Mechanical or electric speedometer? (Planning on installing an aftermarket one if the digital is dead)
4. What kind of maintenance will the turbo require that NA cars don't?
5. I'm told it has a grounding issue, and I've come to understand it's a common issue. Can anyone tell me more about this?
I plan on buying it, but it's been painted matte black and sat the majority of two years. Is $1,500.00 a fair price?
Thanks all, I look forward to sharing my build with you.

Welcome to ZDriver! :006:

You have lotsa questions - but you don't know the mileage? Mileage counts a lot so maybe you can report back with that. Pics are always a good idea if you're asking for purchase price opinions. At this point nobody can tell you if you are looking at a gem or a total dog.

Pick up a freebie factory service manual at XenonZ31 Reference and check out the other cool doc freebies there.

i think you will will want the digital dash to work right in any case. Sorta lost without it.

Are you sure your sister isn't just getting even with you for that time you stuck the label from her favorite hair spray to a can of spray-glue? You never know... :115:

No, but she may be getting even with me for decking her boyfriend once..
I haven't even seen it myself yet. It's something I'm interested in, but I haven't made a firm choice on buying it yet. Regardless, having looked on Craigslist I noticed that most of these cars in nice condition sell for 9,000+, so I'm thinking 1,500 looks really good for one of these..besides, I love a good project, keeps my money on something worthwhile.
