1986 300zx z31 NA to turbo conversion

If I just want to turbo my N/A 300zx, should I get all of the parts to do a VG30E to VG30ET swap (XenonZcar.com - Z31 VG30E to VG30ET swap list) or just engine swap a VG30ET in?

Regardless, you will need the parts unless you use a relocation pipe, then you can eliminate the crossmember. I would base this on the health of your engine, if its got good compression and doesn't burn oil (or a lot of oil) I would turbo your N/A. But if your motor is already tired, you should find a good turbo motor and just swap the whole thing in. You will still need ECU, injectors, turbo, exhaust manifold, oil pan for turbo oil line, Turbo charge pipe to throttle body, and crossmember (if you don't get the relocation piping). I am probably forgetting something but for the most part, the parts list doesn't change much if you are swapping motors or just adding turbo parts to an N/A.

You might consider buying a turbo model instead.

I know it's not what you're asking.

Still, add up the time, effort and money and give it some thought.

I've successfully done what you wish to accomplish. There are a few ways to go around it.

-buy all the turbo parts/strip them from the same turbo trim of your car, and swap them on
-swap the whole engine

Since I did not have means to swap engines in and out, I had to go with the parts out, parts in method.

Since I have no way of removing engines, I also have no way of swapping the crossmember, so the stock location of my turbo will not fit with my stock crossmember. To resolve this, I dropped ta couple hundred bucks on a relocation pipe.

Other challenges I had were swapping the oil pan. You can either drill and weld your own oil drain bung to your stock pan, or you can raise the engine just enough to wiggle the old pan out and the new turbo pan in (I lifted and wiggled)

You HAVE to match the right impedance injectors with the right ECU. This site has info on compatibility between O2 sensors, injectors, and ECU interchanges. Z31 300ZX Fuel System Configurations

I personally think swapping the whole engine would have been easier, but again I didn't have the tools to pull the engine. The extra cost of the relocation pipe could have probably gone towards tools to pull the engine and swap all stock turbo parts.

The theory is the higher compression NA motor with the turbo on it produces more power than the stock turbo lower compression motor. The downside is with higher compression comes higher risk of detonation and generally lower reliability. Personally, I have not had any issues with my '86 na2t and rip the **** out of it on a daily basis, with 200K miles on the clock and an $80 ebay turbo

I'll put it this way; you can either bash your knuckles around the cramped engine pay breaking off rusty bolts, or you can pull the motor and have the luxury of easy access and at that point you should take everything apart, rebuild it, and make her nice and neat

Happy to explain any details!
