How to restore '86 NA rear spoiler?

I've been searching everywhere to no avail, I thought maybe going a little more car specific would help.

The plastic spoiler on my car (1986 NA) is dulled and has hairline cracks/scratches everywhere. This is obviously just the car aging.

Any tips in restoring it to its original state and shine?

A good auto paint shop can restore it for you - or you could probably learn to strip it, sand and patch it yourself to make it ready for painting by a pro. I think the painting is the hardest part. It's likely the same plastic as the bumper covers (urethane? fiberglass?) and that stuff can be restored. I hear that getting it off the car to work on it is supposed to be a pain - but can be done. A lot of guys just removed it and left it off, patched the holes in the hatch.

Since those spoilers were pretty much standard issue on the '86 Z31, there are a lot of them out there. All you have to do is find one in better condition than yours and save yourself the restoration work. Check out car-part.com and see if you can locate a dead Z31 on a recycling lot. Sort your search results by distance from your zip code and see if there is one you can drive to and check out. I would search for the whole rear hatch and call to see if the corpse is there on the lot - check that one out and negotiate for the spoiler alone. Cheap.

Post some fotos of your before and after! Thanks :icon_super:

Thanks for the reply.

It probably would be better just for me to look for the spoiler alone on a dead one. I'll definitely post picture before and after, I might even start a WIP thread to show off overall work.

If you don't mind me asking, have you restored your '86 NA?

Bought my '86na 5-speed brand new in June, 1986. $20,212.00 out the door. Came with 6 miles on the analog odometer, a rear spoiler - and the optional rear sunshade I added at the dealer ($200) the day I picked her up. No other options. Finally had her repainted in 2006 or 2007, minor body work, the original Dark Pewter paint, just to make her shine like new again. She's the love of my life, a miracle car from day one. Except for headlights, never had to replace a single bulb for 22 years. The list of wonders just goes on so I won't bore you. 265K miles. These Z31s are just incredible.

That's beautiful car. I'm sure you've taken care of it. I've got a lot of work ahead of me to even get my Z anywhere near the condition yours is in. Cleaning up someone else's mistake, but it's a journey I'll enjoy. Thanks for sharing!
