zxR Stock

I just got a zxR, initialy I got it to get into some racing. But to make it suitible for that would mean a bit of modifications I think. And after browsing these and other forums it seems that maybe I should just keep it stock and look for something else to modify.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

Keep it stock, and find something else to race if possible.

Some one enlighten me as to what ZXR stands for?

Ya, so the ZXR is a plain 1979 280ZX with a rear spoiler. There's no advantage to it except in racing applications the spoiler is considered factory installed equipment.
These days, that car is so rare, you should go get yourself a different 280ZX of pretty much any year to modify.

Thanks for the info, was just wondering, very rare car according to the history. Although I dont really care for the look of that wing............

:D Its 1979! What do you expect?

It looks much better body colored. Iceice's silver 280ZX has the full Motorsport kit with the ZXR style spoiler... all painted silver. Looks good to me.

I have seen on other forums where several long time owners of ZXR's had removed their wings...if you decide to do that (wich for the rareity sake of the car I hope you don't) could you let me know and we could possibly work out a deal... or if anyone has a ZXR wing up for sale let me know...

I have recently pulled a ZXR out of the junkyard here in Louisville KY and AFTER I had marked the car sold but before I could get ahold of a trailer to haul it home with someone had physically RIPPED the wing off my car (including thrashing my hatch where the mounts are)

I am working on restoring it and have recently have brought it back to street worthy condition but I have lots of bodywork to go...

i say keep the ZXR stock and get yourself a 82 turbo.... im sure you can find one for under $1200.. i know ive seen some go for less then $1000..

I agree with Isaac too.

If I repainted with same color would that make it not stock? Or should I just leave everything as is because its fading in spots?

I have 2 full extra sets of the zxr body stripping decals to put back on. But I am not 100% sure what full stock means.

I have seen people say full stock with original paint job, so dont want to paint it then if it is going to change it some way.

Also what about updating the suspension or tinting the windows etc ?

Thanks

_PITBUL_ 03-14-2004 01:52 PM

How'd u get ahold of the decals??? I've tried to get some but my local dealer can't get them... is there a website or do you have other connections??

if it's the latter any chance I could talk you into selling a set for a resto- project... 10 yrs of junkyard sitting has not been kind to the stickers or the paint on mine.

Bleach 03-15-2004 09:36 AM

I think the re-paint is up to you.

Leaving the old paint on will leave the car in "unrestored" condition. That is pretty cool if you can just carefully buff the original paint up a bit and leave the stickers as-is.

There is also some value in doing an all original restoration like repainting it and re-applying the stickers. Its pretty rare to even have those replacement stickers. Same goes with the interrior. You could clean up the original carpets ect, or you could replace them with factory carpet.

Modifying the suspension and tinting the windows will take away from the originality of the car, but you can always put it back to stock by replacing suspension components and peeling the tint off... so that's not too bad. For a show it would be better to not have that stuff done if you're showing it as an original piece. The one ZXR I saw did have the original paint and stickers. It does have its flaws but is cool to see that it has never been tampered with.
