Hi Guys I know this is not really related to the forum. But it has something to do with my header installment. I need to know, where can I get a propane torch. I remember them being blue. But I have never bought one before. Somebody crappily welded the J-pipe on, I don't know why. And I need to remove the welds, so I can remount the pipe from my Z. I figured if I get the welds hot enough. I can chisel them off with my hammer, and hopefully get the broken J-pipe off, so I can put my current one on. Any pointers or info, would be much appreciated. And by the way I already tried Walmart to no avail.

 

The blue torches you're talking about are most likely the "Benz-o-matic" brand available at home depot, lowes and the like. They will not get the welds hot enough to help with chiseling them off. Without spending some bigger bucks on a oxy/acetylene setup, you might try a air or electric grinder setup with a cut-off wheel. Harbor Freight will also have cheap versions of all of the above.

 

Use a cutoff wheel, (if space permits)as Canyon carver said. It works wonders.
when i got my 87 the exhuast was ghetto rigged to hell,their were all kinds of home made brackets on the car. so i took the cutoff wheel to it.
Exhuast came off no problem gl man.

 

Hacksaw is the cheapest way. Cut off wheel/grinder is in the middle. And Plasma cutter would have you done and out in under a minute Seriously though, take advice above and don't use a propane torch. Use a mechanicle means of removing the welds.

 

Oh, and if you NEED a torch, for what ever reason, try a Homme Depot or Lowes or most likely any Hardware store as well.

 

Wildman... which "J-pipe" are you talking about? I'm guessing the EGR pipe, since you don't have the L28ET... right?

 

Yes the pipe coming from the bottom of the EGR to the exhaust. The current one on the headers is broken off, and welded on the nut. For whatever reason, and I want to get it off, and mount the good one I currently took of my Z. And my Z is a n/a for now. Later I want to turbo it, but I just want to drive him.

 

those are always biotches to get apart, cuz of the corrosion from heat & time. If the weld is more than just a tack weld (like if it's a long bead around the threads), you're gunna have to grind or cut it.... grinding it will prolly destroy it, so maybe just take a sawsall to it & get it over with. Who needs EGR anyway!

 

I need the EGR because of emissions unfortunately. And the welds aren't covering the whole threads. Just in parts. Maybe I will try and put them in my dad's bench vise, and see if I can pry that pipe loose.

I'd also recomend the cut off wheel. Cant beat how easy it makes the job. But since your in the market for a torch anyways they do come in handy for many other things. You can get them at just about any home improvement place or hardware stores etc. Or you can buy just the handle/ignitor and then purchase a small bottle of propane somewhere.

 

Get a Mapp gas torch, its about the same price and a lot hotter!
