When did Datsun/Nissan make the switch?
I'm just curious about a few things concerning the turbo engines. I'm looking to do a turbo swap into my '77 in the next couple of months and I'm wondering what year they did the switch from the L28ET to the VG30DETT? I thought it was when the z31 was introduced but I want to make sure because I would like to stick w/ the I-6 to keep it as simple as possible and want to know what years to look for. Also, is there a year that's better than the others or are they relatively same? By the way, if anyone has a donor car they're looking to get rid of for a couple hundred in the northwest area I'd be interested. I don't care about the body I just want the engine.
That brings up another question. What year did the T-5 tranny and R200 3.90:1 rear end come in?
Thanks in advance for any help.

The VG30DETT (twin turbo) wasn't introduced until the Z32 came out in late 1989 (1990 model year). The Z31 had the VG30DET (single turbo). The 1st year of production of Z31's had the Datsun badge (1984). After that, everything switched to Nissan. Not sure about the tranny though.

Turbo L28 1981-83 280zx
1981 turbo: only available with automatic transmission (but some owners may have swapped by now)
1982-83 turbo: T-5 manual is an option.
1983 turbo: P90 head replaced by P90a head with hydralic lifters.
All turbo 280ZX cars (auto and 5-speed) have a 3.54 R200 rear.
The 3.9 R200 is found in the 1981-83 280zx non-turbo with 5-speed and will stand up fine to the turbo engine. 1981-83 280zx non-turbo with automatic has the 3.54 R200. All of the above mentioned R200 units are an open differential. If you're looking for limited slip, go for the 1987-89 300ZX turbo rear which is a 3.7 R200 LSD.
