Ugh Fuel system troubles
 

Ok well the other day my Z had a fuel line fail on me and I finaly replace them today (With $8/foot fuel line @.@)

Then after I replace the fuel filter I started my Z up and let it idle for a bit but right away 3 of the injector hoses were leaking very badly @.@ Fun times huh?

Now Im just wondering about the injectors themselves. Should I just replace them all? (180K miles on the motor) Or is there a way to just clean them?
Then should I replace anything else besides what needs to be replaced? Like then injector holders?

EDIT: Almost forgot, how important is it to get the right connector on the right injector? I think a few may be mixed up already but im not sure

I have 3 colors of injectors. pink/orange ones, Green, and this one black one.
Aren't black ones turbo injectors???

my person opinion is to replace the injectors and connectors, it makes you feel a lot better knowing your not going to drip fuel on your exhaust manni, i have seen several fuel fires before and if your not in a location to find a fire extinguisher or water hose your SOL, i saw a ford bronco melt before my eyes and the whole time i was thinking... i bet a Datsun would burn up in half the time...

plus your engines gonna run a lot better, as long as you get the wiring right :P

Heh now see, The old one looks like he put a turbo injector in there, So that raises the questions if he even got the connectors right... Oh and all the connectors are broken btw. So I probably will do that and just take my time with the repairs.

So much for new tires...

EDIT again...: After reading the FSM Seems the injectors fire in banks of 2. 1,2,3 then 4,5,6. That and having the connector on the right way is the only thing that really matters.

Seems theres also a filter inside the injector that is cleanable. So Im not getting a new set of injectors. unless their Damaged.

I just went through all of this when I painted the Z.

If you haven't already you can get the injector plugs off on a GM car (I pulled mine off of a v6 Grand Am/Bonneville). Cheap and easy.

That right injector pictured looks like one from Napa. I would say just replace all of them just for piece of mind, but that's just me.

I would but it would run me around $360 for all the injectors, new and that was the cheapest I could find.

And I just found out that the black injector is in fact, a turbo injector...

As for the plugs I really have no choice sept to buy them new. Or drive all the way out to Pick n' pull to get them. And that alone is astoundingly over $120!!! Methinks Oreillys is full of crap...

No wrecking yards out in Vernal? I would think a GM POS would be in every wrecking yard, even the smallest :D I picked up mine for the cost of entry, just showed them the wires on my way out and they said just go... :D


Cheapest I found for new injectors was at Napa... 35.49 each. Comes with the seals.

order them from www.rockauto.com, If I'm not mistaken you can get the remanufactures ones for about $30 per injector.

my 81 n/a also has green and black injectors. you sure its not suppose to be like that. i swear mine does. just changed the o rings cause of vacuum leaks.

My injectors are green. Of course they are Beck/Arnleys. Best fuel injectors, I ever bought for my Z. I paid about $52 a piece for them from www.rockauto.com. That was the cheapest I could find for that top brand. And I am glad I got them. Anyway...all this reminds me. I need to start working on my slicktop again. I have to put the top part of the engine back together. (being the aftermarket rail, and hooking everything back up) Good times. lol :D

i think i had brown injectors on mine... black and gold looks sooo much better :D

Yes there IS a wreaking yard here, which I was kicked out of. As for Napa being that cheap Im blown away...

I'll will look around at rock auto as well, if their that cheap I might replace them anyways.

AND as for the black injector is it a turbo oddly enough, so no wonder why my Z had a weird sputter to it. OR maybe it is a napa one... idk

Um isnt putting turbo injectors on an N/A a bad thing?

Lot more power? Or running really rich? That my concern really. Already had a used replacement to replace that one injector. But would it really add power to my car to run bigger injectors? Or just waste fuel

As long as the injector is pushing in more air and fuel then it would have more power. otherwise, it is running too rich.

And I get what your point at, but that would more then likely require me to adjust the AFM and I should probably get a bigger TB too, neither of which I really wanna do right now so I think I'll put my old injectors back on and wait to upgrade later.

OR.... make it a turbo and get the injectors then! lol

That would be awesome to do lol Tho this Z has one of the earlier blocks in it (1979) so it wouldn't be the best one to turbo

Do the NA Z31 ECU swap, and get six matching injectors. :)

Now that plan I like. When I run out to Salt Lake, I'll probably do just that. Er get the stuff to do just that.

Lol well I was mostly right. I'll probably go out to Salt Lake later this month and get most of that stuff if not all.

As for the current problem Im just going to reuse all my old part and just make sure their really clean. I should have the new O-rings and fuel line tomorrow. And I just noticed that the FSM says theres no need to put a clamp on the injector side of the line, what do you think about that?

the short hose on the injectors are secured in the manufacturing process. If you haven't removed the hoses from the injectors by force then they do not need any clamps. Only clamp them to the fuel rail.
