Trouble With Pertronix Coil

Hello everyone!

The car is a 1979 280ZX, everything's stock except an aftermarket exhaust.

I recently acquired an Pertronix Flame-Thrower 3.0ohms ignition coil, and when I install it within my car, it starts for a second, and then quickly dies. It's getting a second of spark because the car does run, so I know the coil is working, and that it's being properly ignited, but it cuts out after the first few RPMs. I have removed the coil and put in the stock and it started and ran fine.

Do I have to add/change some wiring? Does the 3.0ohm mean I have to use a resistor of some sort? I am very lost and confused!

And yes, the polarities are where they are supposed to be!

Thank you!

IIRC the stock coil is around 1.5-2 ohms so 3 ohms should be just fine. Coil must be duff if putting the stock one in fixes it.

This is what I feared. Ahh I am never buying used items again.

Ah... :D

Hopefully you got it for a good price. Coils can actually burn out if the internal oil isn't covering the actual coils (i.e. coil installed improperly), or if it's wired incorrectly. Usually you can find new coils on ebay for the same price as used ones (MSD Blaster II is a good one).

Also, while we're on the subject. There is a wire that is towards the top of the ignition coil bracket. It's a black wire. Where does it lead? Mine goes to nowhere, just the end of a wire. I've been trying to figure this out but I can't seem to find anything.
