Thoughts on getting sidewayZ

My car has a welded differential and I'm not THAT bad.

What's your thoughts? Should I go through with making the Z into a drift car?

If you like drifting why not? It's your car, set it up how you like it, just make sure you do it at an organized event ,not on the public streets.

I'll take care of her. Here's the plan: eibach springs, tokico struts, swaybars, and stripping my interior again (as well as losing the passenger seat). Of course the stripping would be for comp only.

Don't want her hitting any walls. The previous owner was an idiot and already did that.

ouch lol That rear bumper and quarter are hammered. How long have you beeen driving it with that welded rear diff? Any problems with the rear axles trying to blow out joints? I'm planning on doing a lot of work to my '82 starting next summer, engine swap, suspension, chassis stiffening and a cage, along with race seats and harnesses for both driver and passenger. Then once all the mechanical work is done, I'll worry about making it look pretty lol.

Ever since I got it. Though I drove it like 3 times before it broke down for months. I only got it running about a week ago...at first I thought it was a bent chassis until a friend cleared that up for me. Rides a little shaky though that also has to do with my overall suspension sucking...Slides really easily and loses control immediately on wet surfaces. I avoid rain as much as possible. My tires have no tread though, so thats probably why.

The guy also messed up the front bumper a little on right side (had to be partially cut off) as well as the headlight bucket (it's been replaced) but the hood's got a dent in it still.

It's a nice clean car, I've "restored" it quite a bit but meh.

Too bad your on the extreme opposite side of the country from me. I have a '80 2+2 parts car sitting in the driveway with decent bumpers, but it would most likely cost more to ship them than they are worth lol. I also have the stock hood in excellent condition, other than I stripped the cracked paint off it and primered it, but I'm using it on my '82 until I find time to finish straightening my '82/turbo style hood. Got the headlight buckets still too.

if you want to drift don't take shortcuts. Buy a real clutch LSD.

Those are pretty expensive.

Welded differential was already on my car, it's not THAT bad.

It's cool.

Theres bound to be more Zs around here. They're hard to find but you find one every now and then. Thanks for the offer though, it's the thought that counts.

Thinking about it now, THXone mentioned last night he was parting out his Turbo ZX, and he's in FL too I think. Maybe his bumpers are good enough to use. Just a thought, he should also have a real lsd.

Don't you first need enough HP to spin the rear wheels??????????

Great basis for a drifting car with the small exception that it has NO BAWLZ.

Oddly enough it can still drift like a beast.

drifting is really hard on a car. You obviously don't have enough money for tires let alone all the bushings and other items that will wear out.
Just fix up the car for having fun on the street and forget drifting. Leave the drifting for your Xbox and DVD player

I have access to "free" tires.

Tire places always throw away the ones that are traded in, some don't have that bad of tread.

Don't wanna cut them heard it's dangerous.

that was a joke, in reference to another current thread about cheap (ie wrong) ways to lower a car.

You say that... yet the name of this thread is "Thoughts on getting sidewayZ." Lo and behold, drifting IS dangerous, and you will eventually hit something and cause some healthy damage to the car. If you can accept that, go for it.

To be fair, he did mention drifting in competitions, meaning in a controlled environment with safety measures in place. It's not like he he said he wants to set it up and go drifting all over the city streets of Florida in rush hour traffic.

Ever watch GT Live? Those are pros, who have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours practicing... and by the end of a competition, most of the cars have been mangled in some way. I'm just saying, don't expect your car to make it through thousands of drift miles unharmed.

the springs your using are too soft, harden them up to get easier slide. hard springs in the rear will make oversteer, soft in the back make understeer, not so good for drifting. may want to add msd ignition box, 6al model, that way you have a rev limiter to save the only part you really can!

unless u get a roll cage and a license you cant compete drift. well supposedly they have an amature drift where u dont need teh cage. but they dont make anything, all self sponsered and crap. also, even though its controlled, they keep it controlled with cement barriers on the outside of the course. thats damage/danger
