Talking lady...

Not a technical question, more of a trivial question(s).

#1 Is the recording on a chip or is it a tape? The reason I ask, mine sounds kind of "scratchy" like an old tape or record.

#2 Does anyone know who's voice it is?

#3 Can the voice be "customized"?

FastZ 07-28-2004 08:31 PM

I think it is a tape because mine plays slow and sounds like a gay guy rather than a chick.

Skully 07-29-2004 08:56 PM

hahahahah sorry i had to...

FastZ 07-29-2004 09:00 PM

Hey, its cool. I get a kick out of it and other people do to. I think it is cool and just about every other Z owner i show thinks its cool to. I look at it as custom :D . I tried another one and it worked fine, so I know its the module.

duckyz 07-30-2004 05:04 PM

ok...so we think it's a tape....so far.

Does anyone know who did the voice? I've been trying to research it to no avail. Next step is to contact Nissan directly.

fenderbender02 09-22-2004 10:55 PM

Two questions
first: Is this the voice that says "Your door is ajar" and things like that?
Second: How can I find out if my car had one and where do you go to replace it?
Thanks.

Bleach 09-23-2004 09:06 AM

Yes, we are talking about the voice that says:
right door is open
left door is open
fuel level is low
lights are on
parking brake is on

I think only 1981-83 has it as an option. The earlier cars did not have the voice.
In the back hatch area, on the right side in front of where the spare tire mounts there is a metal box about 8 inches long. That is one part of the voice system. There is another box under the glovebox hidden behind the dash that is the other part of the system.

duckyz 09-23-2004 07:21 PM

Sometimes the boxes don't need replacing. If you have a custom stereo, there is a wire (the color evades my memory right now...) that is attached to the front left speaker. If that wire is not attached, no talking chick. If you listen, you can hear a click comming from the rear and under the dash at the same time when it activates. So---no click, no worky (in my experience).

DoTheDrew888 09-23-2004 08:14 PM

Is the talking lady somehow wired into the same system as the dash lights?

fenderbender02 09-23-2004 09:39 PM

Ok cool when I replace the panels in the car I will look to see if I have one. If I don't are they hard to come by?

Bleach 09-24-2004 07:33 AM

Pretty much all 1982-83 280zx's have them. Turbo and non-turbo. Hooking them up would seem to be a wiring nightmare. I grabbed an extra one and was planning on hooking up just the "lights" warning in my Datsun truck. Its very nice to have someone remind you when you leave your lights on.

A while back someone had written up what each color wire goes to for the talking system. I saved the message on my computer for future reference.

RL - always live
L - live when car is ON
YB, YR, YR, YB - go to speakers/radio
WG - Fuel tank
WB - Hand brake
YW - ?? Seems to relate to the Cruise Control??
LgB - Bulb check relay
B - ground
LG - right door
LY - left door

I found a broken talking lady so I am going to take it apart and let you know what is inside.

fenderbender02 09-26-2004 01:31 PM

DuckyZ: It is a tiny record that is controled by a computer chip. I believe the only way to customize the voice is to get a different record.
FastZ: yours probably sounds like that because the motor that turns the record is almost worn out or maybe the belt from the motor to the record is streched out.
I can take some pics later if anyone wants to see the guts without taking theirs apart.

Bleach 09-26-2004 02:08 PM

Yes, please do take pics. So, is this a mini-CD sized record?

fenderbender02 09-26-2004 03:02 PM

sort of it is only three inches across.

fenderbender02 09-26-2004 08:39 PM

I hope you get a kick out of this Bleach. You can see the grooves. Later when my camera is charged up I will post a pic of the circuit boards and the needle. I may make a schematic of the box if I get the time. If I do I will make it avail to anyone who wants a copy.

Heat Rave R 09-26-2004 09:55 PM

Kinda looks like a brake disc. ^^

Las VegaZ 09-26-2004 11:18 PM

is it metal or plastic? It looks metal

fenderbender02 09-26-2004 11:49 PM

Actually it is plastic it looks metal because of the angle I had it at.

Bleach 09-27-2004 08:12 AM

Nice. I can see where it says "lights are on!"

anlasak 10-10-2004 11:07 AM

Just so you know the speaker wires are the ones between the 2 empty slots and the second Y/R wire. (Off the black box in the hatch area.)

Empty-Empty-Y/B(spkr)-Y/R(spkr)-Y/R-Y/B-Br-Br-R/L

Anyone got a pic of the unit behind the glove box or any idea what it does? I haven't been able to find it in any of my wiring diagrams.

fenderbender02 10-10-2004 12:25 PM

I will see if I have it in any of mine.

anlasak 10-13-2004 05:28 PM

Don't worry about it fenderbender, I went scavenging and found it & traced the wires back to their respective sources.

The black box in the rear just sort of comes off a "T" at the warning module behind the glovebox so I'm going to try and splice it directly to each component from the black box to see if the module is necessary or if you can use the black box without it. :D

fenderbender02 10-14-2004 03:14 PM

Please let me know what you find as I am working on rewiring my dash to get rid of things I don't need. I was kinda considering doing something similar.

Grimmace 10-18-2004 09:52 AM

my 83 has that voice too but it kinda lags down like its in slow motion and talks a deep and not cool but fixs itself, and i was wondering when does it say fuel is low, i normally deive about 350 miles or 17-18 gallons on my tank and i want to hear this voice, does it constantly say it or every once in a while? i dont want to try it out myslef and run out of gas.
