ZX is just when they change from the first gen Z,s. The Zx strat from the year 79.
I hope this helps

not all of them are turbo, X was added when they came out with "luxury" editions of the Z as to my knowledge...

General specs of most if not all Z cars. I'm not sure how accurate these are though.

yea, that's kinda iffy. They said that the Z32 had a SOHC V6. It has a DOHC V6.

Thanks for the help, I guess my real question is how do you tell which Zs are turbo? Thinking about getting a turbo z for my first car (first car that I owned).

if it has a turbo emblem on it, that CAN be an indication. Don't be fooled, though, it isn't always. If a car has a working boost gauge, then that's a for sure way to tell.

Click on links. Most noticable difference is intake (top right on both pics) Turbo has a big fat pipe and n/a doesn't. Both are '82 ZX's, I believe...

TURBO:

Hope this help some...

the best way to tell if it is a turbo is look at the turbo on the engine. people can slap on emblems and even a turbo valve cover but there is no mistaking the actual turbo. the guy who sold me my first 280zx swore up and down that the car was a turbo because it had turbo floor mats!

drivernumber22 Mar 8, 2004 09:20 AM

Were any 280Zs have turbo on them? or was it just in 280zx that some of them had turbo?

Correct! But of course the older Z-cars can have a turbo engine put in by somebody. For your first car, you probably want to stay away from a home-made engine swap like that. Don't buy a 1979-80 280ZX turbo because that will either end up not really being a turbo car or it'll be a swap. Get the 1981-83 280ZX turbo.

From the outside, look for the large hood vents. That will tell you its either an 81 turbo or a 1982-83 280ZX. Not to confuse you, but Nissan decided to use the large turbo hood vents in 1982-83 on both the non-turbo and turbo cars. But if you see the small vents that are the same size, you'll know its an older non-turbo right away.
Inside the car, right in front of the shifter there is a little 280ZX emblem on the center console. The turbo cars say 280ZX TURBO, so that's another clue just in case you're prowling a parking lot and can't open the hood. Next step is to break the window, open the door, and pull the hood release.

then hot wire it and I got my Z!

Also...If you can look under the hood...The stock air box (where you put the air filter) on a turbo will have two inlets ported to the headlights. The N/A will only have one going to the passenger (US) side.

This can be swapped...and I'm thinking about doing it...so look at everything else as well.
