Solid mounts

Good bad? ATM my diff is making that classic clunk and I was going to pull it off and put it back into the right shape then weld it solid for a quick fix. But now I'm wonder what the pros/cons are of having all mounts in the car solid ones.

Oh whats the measurements of a new diff mount so I get it in the proper shape?

NismoPick 07-06-2009 08:18 PM

Did you forget this? https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...t=solid&page=2

BlueKitsune 07-06-2009 08:26 PM

You know I searched for that but it wouldnt show up in the search...

Hows that mount work for you anyways?

NismoPick 07-06-2009 09:59 PM

Works great. Distinct whine on the freeway, but more firm. I imagine once I get my rear poly bushings in for the sway bar & make some solid cross member mounts, it's going to be a bone jarring ride. :D

BlueKitsune 07-06-2009 10:02 PM

lol Lest your getting most of the power to the road that way. For now I'm going to do a quick fix and weld the diff mount solid. Till I feel like getting a new one lol
I'm not totally sure what I want to do to that 2+2 but I do want it make it better then it was stock lol

NismoPick 07-06-2009 10:10 PM

Poly bushings, Mercedes 300D springs for the rear, solid diff mount, new struts, Techno Toy Tuning tension rods, strut bars.... and the thing will ride on rails (as AudioFreak says).

BlueKitsune 07-06-2009 10:21 PM

Nice, sounds like what I want to do, but Im not sure I want to do all this to a 2+2 or a 2 seater.

I wonder which Z handles better? 2+2 or 2+0?

2seater... shorter wheel base.

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 10:09 AM

Hmm why did you pick a 2+2? Just wondering

NismoPick 07-07-2009 01:23 PM

I got it in high school (11 years ago) & used it for my Auto Tech & Auto Collision class projects... then just kept going. I've owned quite a few 2seaters, but ended up selling them all as they were worth more in $ to me.

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 01:48 PM

Ah I see, My 2+2 is the first Z car ive ever owned really lol

NismoPick 07-07-2009 01:52 PM

Just gotta step back & ask yourself what you want out of the car. I did it for experience & will likely sell it & move on to something "bigger & better" someday... like an E39 M5 or Lotus. :D I like the Z, but I'm getting sick of working on old cars.

PurePontiacKid 07-07-2009 01:54 PM

or a slicktop coupe.......? lol

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 02:18 PM

lol I think I'm keeping with the Z cars for a while, its my hobby to work on cars lol
Oh I have the blueprints for the Lotus caterham super 7 btw

you traitor...

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 07:43 PM

XD Ya actually I'm a little shocked to hear that from you Nismo

NismoPick 07-07-2009 08:34 PM

Meh... I'm not giving up on Z cars, but I would like my sports car to be a reliable, comfortable, all weather, daily driver. An E39 M5 is just that.

And who could not love this....

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 08:36 PM

Eh, I dont love it. 4 doors is not for me

NismoPick 07-07-2009 08:40 PM

^^^ Well I've got a buddy selling an E36 2dr M3 for $8k... but an elegant 4dr saloon would also keep the wife happy. :D

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 08:42 PM

lol Anyways back on topic, I'm just waiting for the car to cool down before I get it up in the air on jack stands and pull each wheel to drain out all the old brake fluid (I've never done this kinda of fluid change before) And while it drains out I'm going to take off the diff mount and start working on making it a solid mount

NismoPick 07-07-2009 08:44 PM

Pulling a late nighter?

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 08:46 PM

I have nothing else to do for weeks on end. so ya got nothing better to do unless you say sleep lol

OT, do you drain all the fluid out of the brakes, then fill it up and bleed them?

NismoPick 07-07-2009 08:51 PM

Do the rears first. Open one up, install a hose over the bleeder going into a big jar, pump, watch level in reservoir, fill before it's empty, keep pumping till it comes out clear. On the final pump you'll either need a second person or a 2x4 against the seat to hold the pedal to the floor to keep air out of the line while you tighten the bleeder.

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 08:52 PM

Ok Simple enough. Thanks

Oh how loud is your car with that solid rear diff mount?

NismoPick 07-07-2009 08:54 PM

lol... I actually drove it today & thought about making a video so you could hear it. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow.

It's quite noticeable, but not LOUD, just a distinct whine, especially on the freeway. I wouldn't do it on a daily driver....

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 08:57 PM

Well I drive the Z every day, and its kinda just a quick fix as im getting sick of the loud CLUNK when I hit the gas

A vid would be nice too My friends 300ZX has a whine from the diff and its not to bad

NismoPick 07-07-2009 09:01 PM

That clunk could be the half shafts. My Z still does it from reverse to forward w/ a solid diff mount. Someday I am going to change over to CV's.

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 09:03 PM

The half shafts? I dont feel any play in them tho...

NismoPick 07-07-2009 09:08 PM

Well we'll see when you pull your diff mount. Make sure you put the jack stands on the rear frame, not the rear cross member, or you'll never get the diff out.

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 09:10 PM

Uh I usually put them at the lift points, is that what you meant by frame?

PurePontiacKid 07-07-2009 10:32 PM

HA! You're so wrong bro lol I did that when my diff decided to grenade itself, and I didn't realize that the cross member would flex that much lol

I did have to change the mounting point (the frame rail) to put it back in though lol

Ahhhh... good times... :disgust:

BlueKitsune 07-07-2009 10:41 PM

lol Nice, as for me seems Im not doing the work tonight, I'm a little out of it as it took me 2 hours to draw out a simple wiring diagram soooo I might some how fubar my brakes lol
