What Year is your Z, what type of transmission, what body style, and is it Grand Luxury or not?

It's pretty easy to check the gear ratio in the rear end by counting how many revolutions the driveshaft makes for each revolution of a wheel.

Also, the speedometers aren't exactly dead on at that speed, I know mine is actually a few MPH off when checked against a GPS at hwy speeds

Haha I'll probably be asking you for tips/hints because this will be my first trip out there as well!

True, my Z did get 29 mpg when I stayed outta boost and went 65 on a road trip to San Fran, but without A/C in the desert, I'm pretty sure I'll die in AZ! Not to mention I doubt my gf would like it very much. It's ok though, soon enough I'll have another car so I can retire my Z from being my primary vehicle.

gotta be able to get under the car to do that, i'll have to check it out.

no the reason i am wondering is yours is turning 3k rpm at 80mph i am assuming in 5th
mine in fifth runs 3k rpm at about 70mph, wheels n tires n stuff seem all the same as oem. i guess i'll have to check the ring gear when i drop it some day for new bushings....they are ok now but 30 years old and i know they havent been replaced any time in the past 2 decades atleast so any time new and i am sure

Any one of us could have an inaccurate speedometer and not know it!

Picture looks like 3450rpm at 82mph

4.11 diff suggests 3419rpm at 82mph based on that website linked above

For my 1980 GL with a 5th gear ratio of 0.773 and 225-50-16 tires it shows 3471 @ 85.. Like I said, my speedo is a bit off.

Looking good. Did you get a chance to hike down to the bottom?

[QUOTE=007max;267618]Looking good. Did you get a chance to hike down to the bottom?

We only hiked about 1.5 mile down and then the ranger stopped us and told us that we do not have enough water and salt snacks etc... to hike down more. She did not stop us but recommended we don't. On our way back up we realize she was absolutely correct. It looks easy but on the way up its really tiring. It was the best hike I ever did...hope to go all they way to the bottom during the next visit...
