Is it really that easy?

swapping in the L28ET, straight drop in, rewire ecu and new exhaust ? is it really that easy to convert the car over?

do you need to upgrade the fuel pump too?

NismoPick 11-30-2008 10:51 AM

You make it sound like it takes 5 minutes to do. :D

Yes, it's fairly simple, but it is somewhat time consuming. When I did my turbo swap, I swapped entire car harnesses because I wanted everything to still work properly. Since then I've stripped out the "not so important" things, and realized it would have been much easier to just swap EFI harnesses.

hoov100 11-30-2008 11:30 AM

its a z its always that easy. (and the harness isnt that hard to change out nismo)

tonsoffun300zx 11-30-2008 11:40 AM

you should ask snw for the info he should have it handy

Ratfink 11-30-2008 12:29 PM

The info is already there, and that is what he will say. lol

It really is an easy swap.
Something I would expect to have done in a day. But, I can see how it might take others longer.

260zturbo 11-30-2008 01:13 PM

its only as hard as you make it. just be very familiar with the write ups.

snwbrderphat540 11-30-2008 01:58 PM

the actual swaping of the motor and tranny is easy because its only a hand ful of nuts and bolts just need that extra hand to get the motor to fall into the mounts properly and to make sure the tranny doesn't fall on you. though it can all be done on your own i wouldn't recommend it. and the wiring for any stock ecu is fairly easy to just get the car to run just need to figure out what wires need power/signal then go to town. honestly though, i wouldn't waste my time swapping a turbo motor into a car that had the turbo motor as an option. kinda asinine

gostlrs 11-30-2008 02:35 PM

well the turbos ones are still going for a pretty penny, i got mine cheap and if i can get a motor, and ecu cheap too..i would be saving money. i know on the eclipse it is not worth it at all to try to turbo the car. all the write ups i seen seem straight forward and i cant believe it would be so simple

hoov100 11-30-2008 02:44 PM

honestly, i would just buy a nice N/A and convert it, as you are going to spend alot less on a good N/A, then you would on a nice turbo, plus you dont have to deal with all of the retarded crap that comes with the turbo car.

I didn't say it was hard... I said it was time consuming. But swapping over ENTIRE car harnesses (like I did) isn't quite like a walk in the park.

snwbrderphat540 11-30-2008 04:02 PM

buying a good condition NA then the time and money spent into putting in a turbo motor will only save you so much over buying a good turbo one. Z's were starting to go up in value now they seem to be falling again, all car values have fallen for that matter, its not worth it. you want to put the effort into doing the turbo swap put it something that didnt have the turbo as an option, is lighter, and sexier and has a larger aftermarket selection. otherwise just buy a turbo car.

but there is still a savings, that and if you pieced together a nice turbo swap you wont have to worry about the past owners lack of proper turbo maintenance/abuse. and honestly who cares about value? if you truly love your car dollar value means nothing...

snwbrderphat540 11-30-2008 04:44 PM

logic.... thats all. and also, your more likely to run into electrical problems when doing your own ECU wiring, sometimes things just dont take well. but on the plus side you gain a better understanding and can usually diagnose things better and more properly.

gostlrs 11-30-2008 08:31 PM

paid 750 for car
looking at a running turbo motor with anything else i want off the car for 350

1100 for a turbo 280, cant find that deal anywhere.

wiring does not fade me at all..all i need is a diagram and i can do anything. i am a avionics tech on the f-16 and i replace and repair wires all the time.

my other option is to get a z28 with the 5.7 and try that swap. i would have everything i need except the mounts and i can get those online. i really do not need to drive the car now..and i am trying to figure out whats the best option for me...if my crankshaft key is bad enough on the motor i have now..i basically need to remove the motor.so while its out..i want to make it faster..i hate not having power after the beast cars i had in japan

Ratfink 11-30-2008 08:40 PM

I wouldn't trust what the manuals call wiring schematics. No where near as nice as you see. That's if they are even right half the time.
Swap the harness, ECM from a donor vehicle, and it's easy as pie man.
Mounts are not hard to fab up for another engine either.

I am totally against putting a chevy small block in anything including a chevy.
Takes nothing to do it. Been done a billion times.
Go for a VH45DE if you want V8 power. That's a sweet engine, and can be had for cheap. Not to mention you would keep true to the Nissan make which means that much more when you run and blow the doors off another car. I know of a few cheap and good running Q45's in craigslist in our area.

gostlrs 11-30-2008 08:50 PM

hmmm 278hp, is the same motor in all of the Q45?

this one is only 1000

snwbrderphat540 11-30-2008 08:56 PM

im sure many people can find that deal..... but w/e have fun i guess....

Ratfink 11-30-2008 09:07 PM

Yeah, there are a few out there usually.
Great engine, and the engine even has a forum. haha

It's been done too.

I am going with an L28ET myself. Just keeping it simple, and I love the sound of the engine. I like anything with an inline 6.

gostlrs 11-30-2008 09:13 PM

i found a running l28et in cave creek for 350, i am so torn now..i hate this..i want power, i drive the caddy with the 4.9 in it and it would blow my z away now..i cant have the wife smoking me

Ratfink 11-30-2008 09:20 PM

I know the one you're talking about. I have seen a few of them. Always when I don't have the monies.

God for the L28ET..
Easy quick cheap swap.

gostlrs 11-30-2008 09:27 PM

thats my problem too....if i had it..then i would get it..and be done..but i just got the wife the deville for a smoking deal..so i got to save up again to fix mine..thats why i am kicking around some ideas..

Might be worth checking out. Dunno if you were thinking of it or not.

gostlrs 12-05-2008 12:51 PM

i am gonna go look at the motor this weekend i think, i sold the PS3..LOL there was just a turbo z for a sweet deal i think it sold in 3 hours, i called him and it was gone already

Ratfink 12-05-2008 01:00 PM

Haha.. They seem to sell quick if they are priced good.

Who cares if the rest of the car is a pile if crap. The VH45DE is pretty solid from everyone I hear.

gostlrs 12-07-2008 01:31 AM

man that motor was crap..not running like the add said, not even a radiator or fuel lines hooked to it..back to plan zz
