would anyone no if a chilton or haynes manual would tell you how to fix the stock radio

No, they only tell you how to remove and re-install it. If your's is actually "broken" there are a few places that will "repair" them, but Crutchfield.com has 40 head units between $40 and $99 that are significant improvements over the stock unit.

Unless you are going for a "nostalgia" restoration, I would go with an aftermarket unit. If you still want it to look original, you can mount the new head unit in the glove box like I've done on my 240Z.

I would recommend replacing all the speaker wires while you're at it. The 25 year old thin gauge wire that was originally used was barely adequate back in the 80's let alone now.
