Putting a "turbo" muffler on a N/A 280zx?

What would be the possible ramifications of this?

Can someone explain the difference between a muffler designed for a turbo as opposed to a standard muffler?

Ratfink Apr 14, 2008 10:45 PM

Turbo mufflers often have less restriction and resulted back pressure allowing the turbos to spool easier. Nothing bad will happen, unless you don't like the sound.

NismoPick Apr 15, 2008 06:24 AM

More than anything it depends on WHO is making the "turbo" muffler and what they "claim" it does. Autozone sells a full line of "turbo mufflers" which aren't very different than normal mufflers.

But yes, as Ratfink said... look at the difference in design. A $20 turbo muffler isn't going to be built as well as a $60-$100 high flow / performance muffler.

"turbo muffler" is more just a play on words. Its not just for turbo cars.

NismoPick Apr 15, 2008 08:19 AM

Play on words? No way... anything that says "turbo" has got to be good!!! Like the turbo button on 133MHZ computers... :D FFFAAAAASSSSSSTTTTTT!!!!!

Bleach Apr 15, 2008 08:25 AM

Turbo ECU
Turbo AFM
Turbo air filter
Turbo floor strut tower brace

NismoPick Apr 15, 2008 08:45 AM

ooh! The turbo floor strut tower brace will go good w/ my turbo floor. But does it work with turbo carpet?

Bleach Apr 15, 2008 11:02 AM

only works if you have the word "TURBO" embroidered into the floormats up front

tonsoffun300zx Apr 15, 2008 11:07 AM

but the besteses of all is turbo STICKERS!!!!!

huh... never heard of those....

Well, I've always wanted a borla muffler, but the standard isn't the right size. They do however have the correct size under their "turbo" muffler section. That is why i was asking.

Oh and I'm definitely not trying to be "cool" by putting it on, my stock muffler has holes in it, so i was trying to find a suitable replacement.

So thanks to those who actually answered the question and didn't make it into a joke.

I_Ride_Rome Apr 15, 2008 03:13 PM

Does anybody have any recommendations on what a good replacement muffler would be?

tonsoffun300zx Apr 15, 2008 03:15 PM

you could weld a soda can to a big pineapple can then put it on your car

A name brand one that suits your setup. :D

tonsoffun300zx Apr 15, 2008 03:38 PM

or just go oem.

I_Ride_Rome Apr 15, 2008 04:08 PM

http://catalog.nissanpartswholesale....geField2.y=404

I looked it up on that site, but it doesn't give much information on it at all.

So that bosal muffler is the oem?

Ratfink Apr 15, 2008 05:02 PM

I dunno. I prefer the cool approach myself.
I have a flowmaster 40 series. With the right amount of dynamat inside the car, and a big enough stereo to pump out the rock, I can't hear it at all. lol

If you are going to replace it, why not go for better performance, fuel economy, and a cooler (temps) more efficient exhaust system?

Especially in Tempe. They don't seem to get upset about noise around here.
And you really don't have to be noisy to have much better flow than the oem muffler.

Find something that sounds good to you I say.

Here is what my car sounds like with a FLowmaster 40, header, and triple webers.

And, under load... haha

Couldn't help it.

The popping is from the sound quality of the camera. It cracks when it hits the db limit.

I like the sound of that. I think I'll go with the 40 series delta flow, I just looked it up on their website, and its really close to the cost of the oem muffler.

Where did you get your exhaust work done down here in Tempe, and how much do you think labor would cost?

18" glass pack. Inexpensive, and sounds good without being annoying.

Someone who installed one on a 240z described it as a "low tone that is rich but not boomy or loud". Thats pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.

What brand do you have installed on yours?

Ratfink Apr 16, 2008 11:55 AM

I do all my own work. welded it on to replace the holy muffler that was on there. I will take everything out and improve it again. there is a gutted cat in there from the P.O.

lww Apr 16, 2008 04:26 PM

No name, made by the muffler shop I went to in Dallas. $60 installed.

I_Ride_Rome Apr 16, 2008 09:46 PM

Thanks ducky, I think I'm going to go with the glass pack.

I just need to find a good custom exhaust shop around here in tempe/phoenix now.
