Power steering
Power steering
I tried finding a thread talking about exactly what happened to me and I couldn't, so sorry if this is a repeat.
I just changed my power steering belt because the old one tore off. I put the new one on and I tried to tighten it to specification(service manual) as best as I could. Once I started it it was making a loud sound, so I tightened it up a bit more and the sound went away, however, it does squeal now. What i'm worried about is why it makes an awful sound when I turn the wheel. I can't tell if the sound is coming from the power steering pump or what ( I was the only one out there). Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave.

It feels pretty loose for it being parked, but then again, I've been driving without power steering for a month.
It's hard to say for sure. I suppose it's possible that the pump went out, but it was working just fine until my belt snapped while I was on the interstate. I've not had much experience with power steering pumps, so i'm clueless. All I know is that it's not suppose to be making the sound it is. I wasn't sure if maybe I had to move the steering wheel back and fourth so many times to get the fluid running or something.

-Check power steering fluid level
-Check belt tightness.
When tight, you should barely be able to flex the belt 90* on it's longest span between two pulleys.
Can you post a video or sound clip?

Problem fixed
Sorry for the slow reply. If anyone is having this same issue... I flushed the power steering system by manual specification and put some new fluid in there. The sound is gone and it drives great.
Thanks for the feedback.

I just decided last night to put my power steering belt back on. And what a difference. I have checked the fluid about 3 times now, and it is still full. I think I could get used to this. Anyway glad you figured it out man.
