pistons

so let me under stand this dish pistons are for the turbos and the flat ones were n/a.

reson why is i have L28 in my 240z and it has dish pistons that were a upgraed to the 3.1 stroker. now would this be turbo pistons.and if so some one want to sell me a turbo engin with turbo set up on it.:)

dish pistons came in 280Z's and 280ZX's from 1975 to 1980. basically anything with an N series head on it. when nissan switched to the P79 in 1981, they put flat tops in the N/A motors and on turbo cars, they put dish pistons. The dish pistons in a turbo motor are stronger than the dish pistons in an earlier motor. they have thicker ring lands to withstand the rigors of boost.
If you have a 3.1L stroker, those are completely different pistons all togethor. they could be Z24I truck pistson, KA24E 240sx pistons or even KA24E truck pistons. they are an 89mm bore as opposed to the stock 86mm bore.

hope this helps somewhat....

Dished pistons were used to lower compression ratio. I suppose you could use either piston in a turbo application, but you would not be able to push as much boost though a flat piston. Higher c/r of flat pistons will give you better throttle responce, or 'snap' in the motor in n/a applications. With turbos, just turn up the boost.

cool well iev been wanting to turbo this moter eney ways so i guess i have the right pistons for it, so now i gust need to find a 81-83 stock turbo system now if any one knows some one that has one or evan a hole moter with turbo let me know. if any one els has any info let me know.

thank you

I';ve actually got a P90 head and turbo exhaust manifold. I;'d probably sell them for about $200 all togethor, let me know

dr buddah, what is the compression on your motor? and those dished pistons in your motor aren't the turbo pistons, if i was you' i'd be very careful about running more than 10psi of boost. you may blow your motor..

ok i need to know why? tell me plz

I'm thinking the rings will blow out because they are not turbo pistons and turbo rings.

Notice the first reply to your question. That is all correct. The dished piston does not make it usable for a turbo. An actual 280ZX turbo piston is suitable for a turbo system mainly due to the fact that the dish lowers compression a little AND it has a thicker upper ring to hold up to the added pressure of boost.

Anyway, your idea of buying a complete turbo engine sounds like the best idea. You'll be happier with the results.
