Ok, I am gonna do it...Manifolds

Well I started to tear down and remove the intake and exhaust manifolds today...it was cut short thanks to the rain we have here in Florida. I am trying to follow the manifold sticky on this site and of course do some of my own things so I can remember where connections and vacuum lines go. Well, here are some pics to give you all something "new" to look at.

What ya wrenchin on in the 6th pic? And howd ya get such a clear and proportional panarama?
Its really not that hard. Its all about training your hands to remember where each bolt is on the exhuast manifold. Takes me about 2 hours now to complete the job

I was wrenching on the top "hidden" exhaust manifold bolt that was under that cover on the intake. I am going to hit it hard in the morning before it gets hot outside....I am having some problems with the BIG egr nut so it is soaking in pb blaster till morning time. The panorama I took with my moms camera..then put all three pics together in PS...I wish I had a tripod so the pic would have been perfect.

today i took off a intake manafold. exhaust, and pulled a head. in less then 3 hour's. Sucks being board.

A hammer works wonders on the EGR nut if it's stuck on there good. Just make sure you have the correct wrench on the nut first ;)

I actually saw two nuts on the EGR, a small one just above the large one. Anybody know what thats about?

Skully 06-21-2006 07:33 PM

hehehe CUT AWAY...emo. ..lol!

but sweet keeping buisy, take pics as the manifolds come off too...
cool stuff

thxone 06-21-2006 07:43 PM

I wish I had some drop lights and some other lights now that the rain has stopped...I wanna see my ports damnit!!!

The upper nut is actually for the fitting that joins the EGR tube with the intake manifold. The lower nut is the nut for the actual EGR tube. Usually I try to get the EGR nut off of the fitting when I remove the manifolds cause it's easier to reinstall. I have however had to do it the other way and had to remove the fitting from the manifold with the EGR still attached. It's just harder to rethread it back into the intake manifold afterwards.

did you read the sticky? that top one can be got from that access cover, and you dont gotta take that nut off or the 2 on each side of it to get the intake off. save yourself the hassle and leave the 5 described in my writeup.

Yes, i am following the sticky....but ooops, the reason I am taking the manifolds off is because the bolt is busted off for the exhaust at the #6 Cyl....which is one of the ones that I am suposed to leave in....I will continue to take pics and I am on my way out to the car right now to finish the job.....

thxone 06-22-2006 12:48 PM

Ok, well I have given up on removing the manifolds, Stupid EGR!!!! I think I will now drive the car with this leak and save up for the header cause then I am just going to hack the EGR off!!! Oh, I had to make two new grounds as two ground screws broke off in the top of the manifold. I went ahead and re hooked everything up and on a good note the gas pedal is yet smoother again...I did clean ALL of the connections this time AND I shortened alot of the vacuum lines to get rid of some of the cracking they had. I am not going to let this bother me, after all my goal is to have a header on it anyway. Maybe I will document that insted since I am too much of a dumbass to remove and fix this problem.

Hey man, don't be so hard on yourself. It just takes patience and time. Believe me on that one man, I have way more than I could ever imagine, or not think I could do. But now I more comfortable on what I have learned on here, and from experience restoring my Z. Hang in there bro', it will get better.

duowing 06-22-2006 03:30 PM

Well the one thing I've been wondering is. Even if you get a header, aren't those broken studs/bolts gonna still have to come out anyway?

RodMoyes 06-22-2006 03:33 PM

Dude,
This job is a major PITA the first time around for everyone. Don't give up. Once you are done, you will be glad you did it and you'll feel like you've really accomplished something.

Take a breather and jump back in. You can doo it!

Rod.

Skully 06-22-2006 03:56 PM

yeah when i get stuck on something..i usualy say **** IT! and go sleep on it..come back next day and finish it,then reallise that its not so bad...so roll up the sleeves and get back in there!
