Hey what's up? Well I guess I should introduce myself.

Names Kyle, 18. Los Angeles, CA. I am about to buy a 1979 Nissan 280ZX from a friend of mine this Friday. The car is in overall good condition, but does need new fuel injectors.

After I get everything running correctly I'm going to start making mods to it. Exhaust, intake, engine, headers, brakes.. etc.

But here's the catch! I don't know jack about cars.

I was wondering if anyone here could help me out.

I plan for a 2 year people before my car is ready.


Oh yea, I'm a drift racer. So there will be dings on the car, but they'll be fixed out.

I am happy to soon be an owner of a 280ZX. The second I saw the car I couldn't wait to have it.

Well, to start off with.

I'm looking for information on my car.
The engine type, turbo/non-turbo, the brades, everything I can about it.
But I think I would have to look into the paper work on that one or get my mechanic to tell me.

Then I'm going to need to know what options I have for modifications.
What engines I can swap, what clutches, brakes, what rims/tires I can use.

Then I'm gonna compile a list of it all and see if they'll all work together with each other.

#1... buy a Haynes Repair Manual. THAT IS A MUST. It will help you more than we can... and ya won't have to wait here for an answer.

#2... We have lots of "sticky" threads in the 280zx sections that talk about common problems and mods for the 280zx... from basic repairs to wild mods. There's tons of info already on this site. I noticed on the Haynes manual, it's from 79 - 83? If I can remember back 15 minutes ago..

Do they not make one for each specific year?

I also saw I can get the FSM thing from Nissan, is that on my car specifically?

A Haynes Manual will be fine... you don't really need a FSM unless you need every single little tiny itty bitty detail about the car, and want to pay the high price for FSM's.

The 280zx Haynes manual is from 79-83 (the same years the 280zx was produced).

 

The Haynes will tell you in each section if there are specific instructions for a repair for a particular year. Otherwise, the instructions will cover all years.
I purchased the FSM on CD rom off ebay for like $15. It has been useful also.
There is a sticky in the 280zx sections of sticky's that tells you where to get a FSM. As for the ZDRIVER stickers, there is a post also telling you where to buy them for like $2 each.

 

Ok awesome. Well after that I guess I've got to look for new parts to swap everything out with. Then hope they work =/

Props On Getting A 79 They Only Came In Slicktop. Which In My Opinon Looks A Heck Of Alot Better On The Zx. T-tops Were Made For Camero And Such Wimpy American Cars.. I Know I'll Get Flamed For That As Well. The Only Non American Car That Looked Nice With T-tops Were The Z32's.

 

A never talk crap on t-tops, skittle, expecially on zx t-tops, i'd allow you to talk crap on camero t-tops but never a z.

The Only Reason Is Cause Of The Rust Issue Other Than That They Are Ok. It Just Takes Away Some Of The Lines That Make It Sleek. But Anyhow Lets Not Make This A Debate Over T-top Vs Non T-top So Welcome Any How.

 

A what i say about Dis-n the z car, it ain't cool. Thats funny, skittle, about the rust issue, cause my roof is the only thing that doesn't have rust, if i took pix of the bottom doors and Qtrs. everyone would cry, im in tears myself just thinking about it. Well someday i'll fix her back to better than new. I agree the slick tops are better looking, but being that i have no a/c i'll take my T's anyday.

 

Yeah That Is A Huge Advantage... I Have No Ac And It Sux But I Can't Roll Up My Windows When It Gets Cold Unless I Can Get A Hold Of A 79 Fsm With The Colored Wiring Diagram
