New here

Justa wanting to introduce myself.Just aquired a 1983 280ZX. Currently working on changing the clutch to get it back on the road. Pretty much a Mustang guy but more importantly a car guy. So Im sure Im gonna have plenty of questions for you guys in the near future.

KasbeKZ Sep 15, 2008 07:55 PM

welcome to the forum!

i'll leave the clapping emoticon for nismo

i think you'll like the z's a lot better if you like to do anything not in a strait line. have fun with the clutch job. make sure to do a quick search for most simple questions first. but if it hasn't been discussed before, there are plenty of people to give all the help they can.

Bleach Sep 15, 2008 09:44 PM

welcome Jackstand Z!

new suspension will make that car great fun.

WildmaN Sep 15, 2008 09:45 PM

Welcome to Zdriver. Oh and we don't mind..if your Z is on jack stands. lol :037: I drive my rolling project (280zx) everyday. Anyway looking forward to seeing your Z. And a clutch job is fairly simple...just tedious and time consuming..lol :048:

Blue83 Sep 16, 2008 09:16 AM

I will be driving it once the clutch is done and a new inspection. Its been sitting for about 2 years so it needs a little work before it's road ready. Im gonna put a suspension on it, exhaust and some wheels. But after that all my cash is going toward my Mustang. The Z is going to be primarly my daily driver for the next few years. Then Im gonna restore it back to nice again.

snwbrderphat540 Sep 16, 2008 01:44 PM

hmmm... sounds fair, if this were an S30 not an S130 id say make it nice first before the poostang because that car will actually pay you back in the end. mine did :D but yeah the ZX makes a good daily if you like that retro 80's interior lol. i for one CANT STAND IT! i barely like the interior on my 240sx

Bleach Sep 16, 2008 02:43 PM

you don't like aircraft lighting, center gauge pod, computer self-test readout, accordion style shift boot, digital cassette player, and audible voice warning system!

snwbrderphat540 Sep 16, 2008 03:19 PM

does anyone? lol i dont even know how the 80's found that stuff stylish....

KasbeKZ Sep 16, 2008 03:23 PM

i like most of the interior other then the steering wheel. i'd prefer a leather shift boot, but the accordion suits.

You obviously didn't spend any time in the 70's... The 80's ROCKED! :icon_super:

Analog gauges with a fully leather wrapped MOMO steering wheel, leather shift boot and a nice leather wrapped aftermarket shift knob and the interior of the 280ZX is about perfect... at least if the plastic isn't completely dried up and flaking off... :icon_pidu:

Nope the Mustang is my baby. Its gonna be my road race car/ bad street car.

And not to mention the Z will take alot more to make nice then the Mustang. The Mustang is just getting a powerplant makeover.

Is your 99 a GT as well?

snwbrderphat540 Sep 17, 2008 09:19 AM

i hope so... mid/late 90's were an alright body style but kinda weak sauce, sem to be a great car to build though along with the fox bodies. anyways i said if it were an S30 chassis which yours is not, so i agreed with your statement about which car to spend time on first, lol i think you mis construed what i meant. but at least you didnt take it in a wrong way like many people would have

nismo619 Sep 17, 2008 09:32 AM

Hears a true story of me and my first mustang... it was a 2001 mustang v-6 ... i drove it from San Diego California all the way to New Mexico... after living hear for a year my step dad wanted to buy him self a 280zx.... why ? because when he was in the Navy he always wanted a 280zx... so one day me nad him when to a car lot and found a 1983 9 month of 83 Gold 280zx n/a automatic.. we went inside and the dealer let us test drive the car.... never the less i did some checks on prices... they wanted 3000 for it... and it was in very nice shape ... i talked him down to 2250.87 payments of 150 dollars a month... never the less hears the best part " I put the 2001 mustang away... and drove my " Z " every day ! I fell in love ! I havent owned another car since that wasnt a " Z " i do have " Z " fever.. every time i see one my mind goes " i want it " !

KasbeKZ Sep 17, 2008 09:51 AM

you should have talked him down more if you ended up paying $337630.5 for it by the time it was done being paid for. still have..... maybe 2200.87 payments to go right?

Yes I did. I don't know the difference between the two anyway. But even if it was the better one, this car would pretty much need a frame off restoration. Theres alot of rust on it so it will probably take alot when the time comes.

KasbeKZ Sep 17, 2008 12:15 PM

just for reference, s30 is 240z, 260z, 280z, and s130 is what you have, the 280zx. then it's z31, Z32(the best) and z33

Bleach Sep 17, 2008 01:10 PM

The Z32 killed the production of the Z ... it was the most expensive by far, not necessarily the best. :D

i seriously have over like 1500 horsepower right now.

KasbeKZ Sep 17, 2008 01:58 PM

mockery will get you no where!

i will stand by the opinion that i think that the z32 at least looks the best. but yeah, the cost was a major downer.

duowing Sep 17, 2008 03:23 PM

The 280ZX is actually a fantastic daily driver. I'd know as I've driven it through rain, snow, heat, and the coldest day I drove it on was a 5* Fahrenheit day. Car started up with no problem, then proceeded to drive me about 2 hours back home through a snow storm which showed up halfway through. Oh and my windows even went down fine when I went through the toll booth. My friend's 90-something altima had problems with the windows being stuck. The biggest problem with it as a daily driver is getting the car to run good while cold. Which I've finally managed to get it running pretty much perfectly at all temperatures. Just make sure all your vacuum lines are in order, and it helps if you've got the manual vent system and not the auto and you're good to go.
