New guy, few ?s
Hi Im Mark from Buffalo, NY. I own an 83 and 87 Turbo Supra and just stumbled upon an 80 280zx recently sitting in front of a junkyard that they want $1k for it and they said it needs a fuel pump but it still runs and drives I guess just rough but I noticed the afm has been changed with one from a junkyard and the accordion hose that goes to it is wrapped and duct tape along with a vaccum hose is not connected to it so I think that might be the culprit but I wasnt going to say anything.
I always wanted a 240 or 260z but had to be nearly rust free after seeing the pain of replacing floor pans and so on with other rust issues. After inspecting the car it has 250k (looks like the engines been replaced tho) and originally a so cal car with no rust on the floor pans (no carpet) and just some surface rust where the spare tire sits and the same with the inner 1/4s. Underneath is solid as well.
I was wondering if theres a sticky thread on what to look for when buying one of these cars, the popular flaws and so on to inspect. I also wanted to know how rare are these seats since I never seen this 2-tone combo seats before and would like to get a good set.

If I buy it I plan on just finding a black dash and center console and differnt seats. Im going to leave the rest of the interior stripped and sandblast the remaining rust and shoot the interior with some kind of rhino coating and just enjoy and drive the car without pouring money into it. 2 money pits is enough.
Thanks, Mark

Hi, welcome to the forums. Here's a link with a brief check list on things for a 280zx: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/240z-280zxt-s30-s130-tech-tips-275/280zx-common-problems-checklist-purchase-inspection-16386/
the afm boot, and the hose un-done is most likely the reason it doesnt run well. if you buy it i have some boots, ill sell for like 5 bux if you cant find one local. paint looks good, and the fender is a cheap fix, as well as carpet. looks like a decent find for 1000 bux. welcome to zdriver.
Thanks guys, that link should be a sticky. Other then the rust issues the rest seem to be lil minor things.
Yeah im hoping that fender dent will pop out for the most part, kinda sucks especially since the rest of the body/paint is really clean. Thanks shady though im sure i can find an afm boot locally since ther are quite a few 280s in the junkyards. Im hoping thats the issue.
Are the fuel pumps external or internal by the way?

i would replace the broken hose and the boot to the AFM first, i would also check out those injectors that look like the connectors have been replaced.
i cant tell from the pics but they look like butt connestors, if they are try jigglin em they might not be makin good contact.....they should really be soldered

Yeah Im thinking the previous owner replaced everything except the pump since it does look like it has new plugs, wires, injectors, swapped afm. Could be a clogged fuel filter but yea im starting with the acoordian hose and disconnected vaccum line....simple things first, maybe pull the injectors and check if they are wired in correctly and even if they are the correct size. Then I would prob do the filter and then the pump. I guess atleast its external if it comes down to changing it.
