new 280ZX !! wuhu!
here's the deal: back in my home country i was the proud owner of a 200SX se-r with about 185 hp to the wheels (i'm talking about the 1996 model). Now i live in Montreal, and the first car i could afford a few months ago was VW rabbit. Well times have changed and on monday i will be picking up my first Z car, a 1980 280ZX in GREAT shape, about 65k miles on it. So... my first little mod would be an intake. any suggestions, or am i gonna have to go the home depot fabrication route?
This is so sweeet, i hate VW's!! (well, only my VW's, the have sucked)

It's an NA in the photo so I don't think he wants to build an intercooler. Intake is more likely.
First step is to fix everything that is broken or old/worn out. Replace vacuum hoses, water hoses, re-torque nuts, clean everything up etc etc. Give yourself a good starting platform and you'll have less problems down the track as you try to extract some extra horses. Leave worn out parts on the car and you WILL start to break things.
First step is replacing the air box with a cone type assembly. The constrictions will then be your airflow meter and throttle body. I've heard of people installing a bigger diameter throttle body but I'd be looking at decent exhaust first IMHO. Decent intake and exhaust are what I would see as first and required steps before replacing cams, playing with tuning etc.
Just my 2c, and not *really* z specific.
Edit: I would just add, that air-air intercoolers can be easily fabricated using mandrel bent tubing and an old air-conditioning core. I have seen air-water using the same basic construction but you also need additional water pumps and have to install a much larger radiator in the front. Intercoolers don't do much under 12psi anyway except give you more lag.

You've got a point - can't tell too much from the hood and wheels.
mmm - an aftermarket turbo 280zx would be nice actually. The guy I bought my 280 from has a 280zx with aftermarket turbocharging and it's pretty quick. Well it was - supposedly the L28 turbo is going into a 240 now and he's updating with an RB25DET in the 280.
If it's a turbo, you need a better intake and exhaust first anyway. I didn't think 280 engines ran enough boost to warrant intercooling.

Re: new 280ZX !! wuhu!
thanks guys! (gals?
) about the worn out parts, there are VERY few...the car is in great great shape, very low milage.
are there bolt on exhaust systems or should i build my own? (i actually prefer the last option)
one more thing, i will probably replace the diferential and tranny fluids with red line synthetic... no problem with that, right? and which oil should i use ?....last but not least, does jim wolf make cams for this engine and stuff? any recomandations for good header?
