My turn for a build thread!

Well as you may or may not know, I blew up my engine driving down a flooded road. And that L24 was useless. So I'm just going to use all winter to build my 280ZX 2+2 lol

Right now I have the engine and transmission out, And I'm tearing down the L28. AND I've already broken 2 bolts off, one in the timing cover for where the lower radiator hose goes in and a head bolt. I'm thinking I'm just going to take it down to the machinist to get them removed the a block cleaned up and honed out (cylinder walls are rusted) And also take the Head down as well.

What I want to do is bore it out a little bit and put flattop pistons in it then run a shaved P90 head. I'm also modifying an intake manifold to be EGR-less and grind off all the junk on it then polish it, or paint it.

Um dumb question, how do you get the crank bearing caps off?

PurePontiacKid Oct 24, 2009 03:10 PM

with a mallet or a brass hammer.

They're called "main caps" btw ;)

BlueKitsune Oct 24, 2009 03:12 PM

Main caps, Thank you lol I forgot the name of them.

BlueKitsune Oct 24, 2009 03:31 PM

Now I need to find a way to pull the two main caps that apparently need a puller. hmm

Nvm I got them, I made my own little puller and it worked, after I broke one lol

Ok! All torn down and ready to go to the machinist. And I've decided Im not gonna bore it out, just hone it to get the rust off. But I'm still going back and forth on the Flattops and the shaved P90

And for shits and giggles, my assortment of L engine junk!

lol I sometimes forget how some people aren't lucky enough to have a machine shop in their side yard :P

you might not be able to run the stock pistons if they have to hone it much, I know that my dad honed a block for a friend of mine and it was right at the limit of being too big for the pistons, and it still wasn't 100% perfect...

BlueKitsune Oct 24, 2009 11:41 PM

I should have said de-glazed Its only surface rust really Then again I think thats just another name for honing

PurePontiacKid Oct 25, 2009 12:19 AM

yea, but it still won't be ideal... I guess people do it all the time... just not something I'd want to risk...

BlueKitsune Oct 25, 2009 12:22 AM

Well that engine is going to a local machinist to get hot tanked and to get a broken head bolt out. I'll see what he says on honing it too. The bore is still right on the nose of 86mm

NismoPick Oct 25, 2009 12:10 PM

If you have a welder, you can just weld a bolt on the end of the broken stud and back it out. I had to do that on an old 4Runner.

BlueKitsune Oct 25, 2009 12:13 PM

I do have a welder, but its the cheapy mig from checkers and it throws off slag that welds itself to any nearby metal. and I dont want that to happen to the block

skib Oct 25, 2009 01:03 PM

why a P90 and flats?

if your going to use flat tops you should user a head that will get you a CR

BlueKitsune Oct 25, 2009 01:34 PM

Cuz a P79 and P90 have the same combustion size and I was going to shave it if I can Or just run the flat tops and non-shaved P90

do you have another head besides the P90? or are you just using it because you have it?

BlueKitsune Oct 25, 2009 03:07 PM

Im just gonna use it cuz I have it. I have 3 other heads I can use, 2 N47's and a P90a Er Actually make that 4 as I also have a P79

thetremendousti Oct 25, 2009 03:21 PM

how much are you paying for the hot tank and bolt removal?
My bearings costed me about $70
the pistons were $210
arps were $150
gasket set was $80
accesory stuff $40?
so....roughly $550 for my rebuild? I was right on the nose of 86 mm as well...in fact my largest was 3.3878" and smallest was 3.3863" so around .05mm difference what were yours mic'd at? Im curious if you're going to be running STD pistons like me...

BlueKitsune Oct 25, 2009 06:24 PM

Huh thats not to bad actually. And I haven't taken it to the machinist yet to get hot tanked (which I'll probably take everything so I don't have to do any cleaning for putting it together) And Idk Yet on parts list but I'm buying everything from Black Dragon Auto.

PurePontiacKid Oct 25, 2009 06:29 PM

get the block and rods shot-peened as well, too ;)

BlueKitsune Oct 25, 2009 06:33 PM

Isn't that an old V8 racers lore? Or does that actually work on an L engine?
Anyways this isn't really being built up for racing, I'm more or less doing pretty minor things that might help the HP a little (Like Higher compression) But In all honesty, I don't really have the money to to that other then to just rebuild the engine to Factory Specs.
That is Unless some people buy some parts of my parts 280ZX, which Is now town down and the shell gone, but I saved everything off the car.
