Mass Air Flow sensor problem - 1983 280ZX

My mechanic has been having problems getting wrong spec readings with two remanufactured mass air flow sensors (MAFS). (Advance Auto Parts & Progress I believe).

The computer and all ECB wiring have checked out fine to the book specs.

The MAFS stays open throttle from 1000 to wide open throttle. He getting wrong readings on both the remanufactured ones from the 280 book specifications.

I'm not a mechanic. I told him I would check to see if there is a factory mass air flow sensor available possibly. Cost? He said these remanufactured ones are made in China or somewhere and he's not at all impressed with them. He can send the two he's tried already back with no problems, but we wanted to see if anyone had a suggestion before we tried a third one.

Thanks and I hope I explained the problem clearly.

Well first things first... it's an AFM (Air Flow Meter), not MAFS (Mass Air Flow Sensor). There is a BIG difference.

Anyway, there are tons of AFM tests in the FSM (www.xenons130.com/reference) and adjustment procedures on the web (http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/afm/index.html)

Adjusting the AFM as described in the above link will usually solve the problem. The only time you'd need to replace the AFM is when your mechanic is trying to gouge you for more $$$, or the AFM got dropped and the connections or carbon track were damaged.

:D

Thanks for the reply. If by chance the AFM is bad, does anyone know of a particular brand or resource for a quality one?

If I remember correctly Bosch still makes new ones. But, don't ask your parts guy for one for your Z. I want to say it would be for a mid '80s BMW 5 series. For some reason, the cross reference never happened. Same part.

A friend of mine came over with Fiat 124 Spyder 2.0l fuel injected engine. The AFM looks very similar to ours and is made by Bosch. It's a four banger and a 2 liter so it might not be the same...
